    Taking its inspiration from the real-life story of Olympic gold medalist Jang Mi Ran, the MBC coming-of-age romcom Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo tells an encouraging story about dreams, love and growth. Lee Sung Kyung (Doctors) takes her first leading role as a young weightlifter who falls in love with her childhood friend played by Nam Joo Hyuk (Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo). Directed by Oh Hyun Jong (A New Leaf) and written by Yang Hee Seung (Oh My Ghostess), the drama earned the Excellence Award for Lee Sung Kyung and Best New Actor actor for Nam Joo Hyuk at the 2016 MBC Drama Awards. The drama also includes Kyung Soo Jin (House of Bluebird) as a top rhythmic gymnast and Lee Jae Young (Oh Hae Young Again) as a doctor. Lee Jong Suk, Ji Soo, Kim Seul Gi, Girls' Generation member Seo Hyun, Z.Hera and weightlifter Yoon Jin Hee appear in cameo roles.

    Deeply influenced by her father, Kim Bok Joo (Lee Sung Kyung) becomes a promising weightlifter at a young age. Jung Joon Hyung (Nam Joo Hyuk) is a talented swimmer plagued by his numerous false-start disqualifications. While riding on a bicycle, Joon Hyung bumps into Bok Joo and his handkerchief gets taken away by Bok Joo. Believing that Joon Hyung stole her favorite T-shirt, Bok Joo refuses to return the handkerchief but soon realizes that Joon Hyung was the boy she saved many years ago.
