Ancient erotic tale brought to life Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Erotic Ghost Story" tells of three female fox spirits who take on human form. Through living virtuously and through conscientious spiritual cultivation, the spirits will be able to retain their human form forever. This is their dearly desired goal. However, if they stray from this path of spurning their fleshly desires, then they will revert to being foxes. The film essentially is comprised of three acts. In Act One, the characters are introduced; we meet the fox spirits in their human form and we meet their next-door neighbor, a handsome young scholar who they find irresistible. In Act Two, we see each of the fox spirits in turn throwing themselves at the scholar. This trio of sex scenes can become a bit tedious. The first of the scenes, featuring Amy Yip, is a bit mechanical, as the director strove to show as much skin as possible while remaining within Ms. Yip's rather idiosyncratic boundaries; the scene would have worked much better if the director had showed less and simply let the actors engage with each other. In the second scene, the actress clearly had no boundaries and the director chose an overly explicit approach that feels a bit like watching a naughty (and overlong) gynecological exam. The third of the scenes has the most natural look and, consequently, is the most successful. In Act Three of the film, we begin to see that something is not quite right with the scholar. At first we suspect that his relations with the fox spirits has caused him to age, but then we realize that something much worse is afoot. The scholar, it turns out, is no scholar at all, but actually is a ferocious demon. Moreover, as a consequence of having given themselves to their lusts, the fox spirits are beginning to return to their original form. The film culminates with a titanic battle between fox spirits and the demon. This struggle works surprisingly well and creates an exciting finish for the film. The film's sound quality is muddy in parts, its image quality is inconsistent, and its acting is mostly leaden. Nonetheless, the movie succeeds, largely due to the power of its ancient source material. Definitely for mature viewers only.
