Directed by Stanley Kwan and starring Canto-pop superstar Sammi Cheng, Everlasting Regret was the only Chinese film in competition for the Golden Lion at the 62th Venice Film Festival, and winner of the Premio Open 2005 (Arte Communication) award. Adapted from Wang Anyi's award-winning novel, the film follows the life of a legendary Shanghai beauty, Wang Qiyao (Sammi Cheng), whose fading glamour is mirrored by the prosperous growth of the city of Shanghai. The film co-stars Tony Leung Ka Fai, Hu Jun, Daniel Wu, and Huang Jue as men who fall for Wang Qiyao. Yet those she loves just leave her one after another when she grows old, and eventually she herself has to face what fate has prepared for her. The metropolitan city is perhaps the only thing that can survive all the drastic changes and remain forever young...

Everlasting Regret resembles Stanley Kwan's Center Stage thematically for both detail the rise and fall of a Shanghainese woman, but Everlasting Regret ambitiously covers a longer period from 1940s to 1980s, almost half a century. The nostalgic mood of the film reminds of Kwan's best-known piece Rouge. Art Director William Chang, famous for creating a nostalgic atmosphere in Wong Kar Wai's In the Mood for Love and 2046, successfully reconstructs the lifestyle of old Shanghai.

A noble but inconsistent film Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Director Stanley Kwan's "Everlasting Regret" is a tale told with pregnant pauses, baleful gazes, and words left unsaid. Its glancing, episodic approach to storytelling makes it both intriguing and confounding, involving and frustrating. Sammi Cheng stars as Wang Qiyao, a girl who is snatched from obscurity to become Miss Shanghai, then squanders her life in a series of mismatched love affairs. Tony Leung Ka Fai plays the photographer who placed Qiyao on 'centre stage' (pun intended), then squanders his life in unrequited pining for her.

The story spans three decades in Chinese history and manages to bring each succeeding era to life. Watching Qiyao age from girlish youth to fading beauty is remarkable; Sammi Cheng and the make-up artists succeed admirably in depicting these transitions. Sammi's performance as Qiyao has many vivid, memorable moments, yet in the end Qiyao remains an enigma. One wonders whether the blame lies with the cryptic script or to a failure of Miss Cheng to grasp her character. Leung Ka Fai, on the other hand, succeeds beautifully in portraying his tragic character infected with an infatuation that can never come to fruition.

"Everlasting Regret" is an ambitious and admirable yet deeply flawed film. I'm very glad I watched it; I think it tells an important and sometimes moving story and expands one's cinematic vocabulary. I am eager to see it again and am happy to recommend it for lovers of arthouse films.

Thank you Director Kwan for another movie "Gem"! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Movie review is a matter of personal opinion. A person may like or dislike a particular movie based on their life experience, personal interest or film industry knowledge.

Watching Film is very subjective, one cannot be influenced by what we think the character should be acted in such a way. Instead we should focus on why a particular scene is being made that way. Please remember criticizing acting also means we are really criticizing how a director wanted his actors to play a particular scene.

I agreed that this movie should be a bit longer to clarify a lot of the plots. However, being a H.K. movie, one has to edit a lot of the scenes to fit the regular screening in a commercial environment.

I like this movie. The selection of the cast members were appropriate. The cinematography and the choice of music is brilliant. As to Sammi Cheng's first attempt to artsy film. I gave her 80%.

Three scenes stood out in my mind that Sammi handled the character well:
1. The head banging scene is awesome, one can feel her excellent acting there.
2.The reunion with her High School buddy after a long separtion also speaks volume, Sammi certainly displayed her emotion well.
3.The scene where Sammi was taking picture with this fake husband was outstanding. She gave me the impression of someone very embarrased yet wicked at the same time.

Overall I found we should encourage more new actress instead of comparing the old gurad with the new. As to the criticism to the plots. Please note that a lot of movies need the audience to slowly captured the director's points. I found this movie entertaining and very fast for a drama movie. May be the avant-garde editing technique is not being accepted by most film goers, I wondered!

This movie was highly anticipated as its production values are excellent and the director has captured the essence of life in Shanghai with marvellous costumes, sets, props and music. However I spent the most boring 2 hours of my life trying to figure out the plot and why the female lead Sammi Cheng has a blank expression on her face the whole movie. Everyone else eclipses her with their acting be it Hu Jun, Tony Leung or even Daniel Wu. Sammi sleepwalks through the entire movie without any expression giving this movie a hollow core because ultimately the movie is about her character. And because you don't care for her character, you don't care for the plot. You simply wait for the movie to end and just admire the beautiful sets and costumes. Now I know why this movie did not receive any Golden Horse nominations although I found out too late after buying it.

A Tragic Woman and her Shanghai Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
The best thing about this movie for me is the master
work of the artistic director, William Chang. He's
done it again after "In the Mood of Love" and "2046".
He is simply amazing in creating a certain and right
mood. I also liked Sammi in this movie. There is
something about her that I can understand why the
director chose her for the role, even though her mandarin was not perfect (but not bad). The rest of cast also did a good and decent job. This woman's life
echoed that period of Shanghai and vice versa.
I have a particular fondness of Shanghai and Hong Kong that I can relate to its poignancy. I also admire
immensely the people who lived and still live in
both cities.

what a boring and long movie, i am so disappointed, and i used to like all sammi's movies, but not this one for sure. i experienced the longest two hours in my life. this movie is boring and the story plot is not intensive and vague.
