A Bonnie Pink classic
|
Bonnie Pink's "Evil and Flowers" sounds as fresh today as it did when it first was released over ten years ago. Bonnie describes her music as "happy-sad" and that bittersweet sound pervades this now-classic album. While there may be something characteristically Japanese about this "happy-sad" sentiment, Bonnie's music on this album is unlike anything else that was popular on the Japanese music scene at that time. Recorded in Sweden, one senses Bonnie's isolation in these songs, while also hearing an exhilarating sense of adventure. What strikes me upon hearing this music again is its beautiful lyricism. Filled with memorable melodies captured in sometimes spiky and always distinctive arrangements, "Evil and Flowers" continues to challenge and comfort listeners. I suspect it will sound just as fresh ten years from now. |
