Director's & Lead Actor's Biography
導演:唐煌
Director: Tang Huang
A juxtaposition of three short fictions from Pu Songling (1640-1715)'s The Liao Zhai Collection of Chinese Ghost Stories, Fairy, Ghost, Vixen is arguably the first ancient costume Mandarin production in its form. The three stories are adapted by famous playwrights Wang Zhibo, Wang Liuzhao and Yi Wen (Evan Yang), and are directed by Tang Huang, who manages to balance their unique characteristics and the entirety of the film. To the jealousy of many, Tang Qing plays the male lead in three stories, having a love affair with the vixen (Bai Bing), the ghost (Zhang Huixian) and the fairy (Chen Fang). Also noteworthy is the outstanding performance of Mo Chou, who plays a villain vixen that seduces Tang Qing in a sexy and tempting outfit.

Delightful supernatural tales
|
"Fairy, Ghost, Vixen" provides a trio of unconnected tales, all starring the excellent Tang Qing as a randy young scholar who permits his libidinal attractions distract him from his studies. In each of the tales, the object of his attention turns out to be a supernatural being, a ghost (Annette Chang), a fairy (Chen Fang), and a fox vixen (Bai Bing), and his lusts lead to unhappy consequences. Tang Qing was over 40 years of age when he made this film, but manages to carry off his young scholar characters with aplomb. Annette Chang, Chen Fang, and Bai Bing all give nicely nuanced performances as the irresistible otherworldly beings. (The lovely Annette could haunt me any time!) This version of the movie is presented in pan-and-scan format, but surprisingly doesn't suffer much from that approach. The video and sound quality are very good for a movie that does not appear to have been remastered. These ingeniously-concocted tales are told with a delightful comic zest and make for richly enjoyable viewing. Highly recommended. |

elegant storytelling
|
The simplicity of a bygone era of films starts here. three stories, and three exquisitely beautiful women will linger long in your thoughts after the experience ends. the stories themselves are basic. mostly, it centres on the fallibility of men. how true! of course, the stories are dated, but since the style is threatical, trust rather--in your feelings and curiousity for a lost era and not high tech realism. A treat! nevermind the cinemascope, I found the transfer and color very acceptable for such a period piece. To be able to talk about people and the supernatural through the natural of actors and stage sets is high art. It teleported me (to an era my grandma would understand). I hope it does to you |

Should add that like "Mad, Mad, Mad Sword" the DVD production itself is a disgrace, starting with a full-frame transfer of a famously gorgeous widescreen film. |

Cathay/Panorama on hiatus?
|
Not so much a review of this item as of the DVD re-issue program as a whole. It is hard to understand the thinking behind the frustrating start/stop pacing of the releases--especially in comparison with the clockwork regularity of the Shaw Brothers/IVL series. Allowing customers to get into the habit of buying seems crucial for success in theis sort of enterprise. |
