YesAsia Editorial Description

Fatal Love, directed by Leong Poh Chi in 1988, features the late superstar Leslie Cheung in a role tailored for him, plus sexy actress Cherie Chung who enjoyed great popularity in the 1980s. The film demonstrates much innovation by mixing various genres like suspense, horror, and romance. Leslie Cheung stars as advertiser Wing, who almost hits a gorgeous lady (Cherie Chung) when he is driving home late at night. He falls in love with this mysterious beauty at first sight, but his best friend Ken (David Wu) thinks that is merely a ghostly encounter. Wing's colleague and admirer Ann (Ann Bridgewater) even suggests Wing to seek help from monks for exorcism. However, obsessed with this unknown lady, Wing finally finds out that she is the mistress of the triad leader Sam (Melvin Wong). What Wing doesn't know is, his love for a triad leader's mistress can turn out to be fatal!

A missed opportunity Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
As a fan of both Leslie Cheung and Cherie Chung, I'd like to be able to say kind things about "Fatal Love". In this movie, Leslie plays a creative director at an advertising company. While driving late one night, he nearly hits a beautiful woman (Cherie) with his car. He gets out of his car to search for her, but she disappears into thin air. His subsequent efforts to track her down seem to reveal that she actually was a ghost who died a month before the incident. Eventually, Leslie stumbles upon Cherie, only to learn that she is the kept woman of the ruthless heir of a business fortune. Leslie's efforts to remove Cherie from that awful relationship and gain her love for himself lead both Leslie and Cherie down a dangerous path.

To me, it seemed that Leslie Cheung never fully connected to his role. While Cherie Chung does a nice job as the beauty trapped in a terrible life, Leslie seems a bit distant. Ann Bridgewater is excellent in a supporting role as Leslie's coworker who harbors an unrequited love for Leslie. The great Ouyang Sha-Fei is wasted in a small role.

"Fatal Love" intermittently captures an air of mystery, suspense, and romance, but squanders those moments with some jarringly ham-handed direction. Fans of Leslie and Cherie will want to see "Fatal Love", but it could have been much better if made by a more skillful director.
