YesAsia Editorial Description
It is a fact that the legendary Lau Brothers are among the very elite of the Hong Kong action cinema. In their 1979 kung fu comedy Fists and Guts, the Lau brothers occupy different positions on and off the screen, with Lau Kar Wing directing and co-starring with Lau Kar Fai (better known internationally as Gordon Liu), and Lau Kar Leung leading his brothers on action choreography. Multiple award-winner Arthur Wong serves double duty as screenwriter and cinematographer, as popular villain Lo Lieh, Lee Hoi Sang, and Lo Hoi Pang round out the main cast. The film is packed with ingenious fight scenes the Lau Brothers are known and loved for, and in particular the climatic 9-minute all-out kung fu showdown between Gordon Liu and Lo Lieh is considered one of the best the genre has ever seen.
The sacred relics of Buddha kept inside the Shaolin Temple is stolen by a Tibetan monk. In response, the Temple sends an apprentice named San (Gordon Liu) to Tibet in the guise of a civilian to investigate. Unfortunately, the raider is a master of disguise, and that gives San a lot of troubles on his mission. But, with the help of new allies Yung (Lau Kar Wing) and Peng (Lee Hoi Sang) and his own Fists and Guts, San eventually manages to get the sacred relics back!

More Fists Than Guts

I actually own the vcd version by Tai Seng Video and we all know their production quality. At the time of purchase, I just wanted this movie because it starred Gordon Liu. Since Phoenix Lin didn't specify as to the picture quality, I supposed it must be ok unless it's a transfer over from their old dvd and given a good clean-over. So, here I am with my review. Star of the show was Gordon Liu in partnership with Lau Kar Wing (Sifu Director Lau Kar Leung's brother) and who is himself, a bonafide Director & Sifu of Hung Kuen. A low budget production primarily set in the country side complete with huts and cheap props. However the plot is quite interesting. Gordon, a Shaolin High Priest, goes in search of a Buddhist relic which was supposedly in the possesion of a Tibetan monk played by Loh Lieh. His search takes him to a small village whereby he encountered Lau KW and his friend/cohort, Lee Hoi San (another veteran sifu). The duo always schemes to make quick cash and Gordon took advantage of the two simpletons and told them that he was searching for his housekeeper who has stolen his inheritance. He vowed to give them a good percentage if they help him look for the culprit. Eager for easy money, they agreed. So they went around looking for a man who has a very short haircut. This point fixed in their minds, they had a case of mistaken identity with dire hilarious result. Loh Lieh is master of disguise as he tried to keep a low profile. By coincidence Lau & Lee cross path with Loh Lieh and Gordon got hot on his trail. Their pursuit brought them to Loh's house which has a secret basement fitted out with traps. Gordon then had to think of new ways to overcome these traps. The fighting sequence in the finale was quite interesting but of course Gordon steals the show as usual. But wait till you see what the inheritance is........... Cameo roles for some usual Lau 'karpan' guys like Mars. |

I don't know if there was a surplus of unused fight sequences that really didn't have a plot/story to call home but I think this movie gave an acceptable excuse to throw them together. The typical plot of "Rah!Rah! fight, kick your butt...oops, sorry wrong person." (that was mistaken identity in kung-fu movie speak) Highly enjoyable as sharing kung-fu snippets with your buddies & replay value in my book. |
