「海儘管深還有底，但是我跟你……兩顆心，一片情，心海更深。」《情深似海》是一部充滿詩情畫意、感人至深的文藝片，不僅故事纏綿悱惻，而且取景優美，製作嚴謹。五十年代中期開始走紅影壇的葛蘭向以載歌載舞來吸引觀眾，無片不唱，也無片不跳。本片卻是她從影以來唯一一部作品不唱也不跳、純仗全情投入的演技來演活一名無怨無悔地為自己所愛付出的妻子和母親，結果成績蜚然。她片中要表達的感情幅度十分寬闊，但她卻巧妙地揉合了開揚的默片模式表演風格，和自然與生活化的演出方法來演繹角色，效果天衣無縫。編導易文也有特別出色的表現：全片實景拍攝，節奏舒徐有緻，感情的描寫絲絲入扣，既避過了煽情的毛病，但也沒半點削弱的故事的感人效果，教人看後低迴不已，堪稱是他創作生涯中的一部傑作。
Fans of Grace Chang can hardly afford to miss her marvellous performance in Forever Yours, the only film, believe it or not, in which she doesn't have to display her skill in songs and dance but instead, touches the hearts of her audience by her straight acting. She plays a strong-willed woman whose overwhelming love gives her husband hope and courage to combat with death. Shot on location completely (a rarity in the Hong Kong cinema of the time), the film is also arguably the masterpiece of Yi Wen, the prolific director known for melodrama and comedy.

Good, solid melodrama

Ge Lan excels as an orphaned woman who finds a true feeling of family when she falls in love with a man suffering from tuberculosis. As you might expect from this premise, "Forever Yours" is a four-hankie melodrama, but one with real heart and soul. The movie owes much of its success to Ge Lan's outstanding performance. She employs a wonderful technique of underplaying the film's big emotional moments; this makes them feel much more authentic and powerful. And did I mention that she looks ravishingly lovely? A well-constructed story and well-written script make "Forever Yours" fresh and engaging from start to finish. Very highly recommended for a general audience. |

Bittersweet love transcends mortality

FOREVER YOURS was a landmark film in Cathay Studio's history, when a popular star excels in a certain type of role, she or he will be typecast to assure their box office appeal. Ge Lan or maybe the producer was daring enough to make a movie like this, devoid of song and dancing, color, happy situations, drab settings, this bittersweet love story succeeds in the way the Italian neo-realists succeeded with their gritty real life dramas. Fans of Ge Lan will be pleasantly suprised by her assured performance in this very sad but poignant love story. Another worthy addition to the collection of Cathay classics. |
