Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain, based on the same titled swordplay novel by Jin Yong, stars handsome Mainland Chinese actor Nie Yuan (The Road) and Hong Kong's Athena Chu (A Chinese Odyssey) in an intriguing martial arts drama. Famous Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Jing, producer of this series, secured a helping hand from Andrew Lau (Infernal Affairs) to advise on directing. The series also pools together Gillian Chung of Twins, Alex Fong Chung Shun, Anthony Wong Chau Sang, and Ady An to form a star-studded cast. Now Cantonese dubbed, this swordplay dramas also comes with English subtitles!

The story focuses on young and talented swordsman Hu Fei (Nie Yuan), whose father (Anthony Wong) was killed while he was only a kid. In finding out the culprit, He Fei encounters a beautiful woman who is just as good in martial arts (Athena Chu), a Chinese medicine expert (Gillian Chung), and a young woman (Ady An) whose father Miao Renfeng (Alex Fong) is believed to be the murderer of Hu Fei's father. Will Hu Fei kill Miao Renfeng for revenge? The original novel never tells what happens in the final battle between the two - see if you can find some answers from the TV series!

I'm not the type to watch a series because of the actors, but more for the story. Fox Volant is one of my favorite Jin Yong novels. I thought this version was okay. It wasn't as good as previous adaptions I've seen, but there were some interesting storylines that were not explored in other versions. I liked how Wong Jing focused a lot of the story on connections with characters from the "The Book and The Sword". It adds to the overall depth of the Jin Yong world.

FYI for Xiang: Yuan Yiji and Cheng Lingsu are NOT made up characters. They are characters from Jin Yong's second book on Fox Volant (technically a "prequel" that focuses on the Wu Fei's early years).

Okay this just gets really wierd. It is not faithful to the story what so ever!!! They just totally made up Athena Chu and Gillian Chung's character. For most of the story the reader is supposed to think that Hu Fei is dead. They totally messed up Ruolan's [Orhid's]character. She is supposed to be a well mannered, polite, calm young lady. As my mom put it "I haven't read the story but everything seems super dramatized." Fei isn't supposed to meet Orchid until he is 27 and she is 17. He is supposed to be gruff looking with course hair and a beard. The Poison King is totally made up [I wonder if Chung's senior is supposed to be the Sign like sharacter?] Phoenix the Knight Errant [Ruolan's father] isn't supposed to become blinded. At first I didn't know how they could make a whole series out of such a short book but now I know that they just added on a million parts. Sorry for ranting for so long but I just really don't like it at all.

How is it? Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
I am currently reading the book but I haven't seen the movie. I am afraid that it will be lousy. Can someone tell me whether or not I should by it?
Also the names in the book aren't written in pinyin instead they are like Fox, Orchid, Radiant, Curio, Tree, and Valour. I don't know mandarin so I am afraid that I won't be able to recognise the characters.

I really enjoyed the series, although like the others I felt some parts were better than others. I loved Gillian Chung's portrayal of Cheng Lingsu because her face seemed to match the emotions always. Her dilemma was one of the most compelling of the challenges facing any character in the story.

Miao RenFeng's character was fairly simple, but his actor was also able to match with the character well and I liked him. I found that the most frustrating part of the series was Wu Fei's recklessness and poor choice in women. The movie could definately be considered a tragedy, because I don't feel any of the characters got what they deserved. It was also disapointing to see that the main character performances Wu Fei and Yuan ZiYi were poor in comparison to the supporting characters Miao Renfeng and Cheng Lingsu.

I lost interest towards the end of the series probably for a similar reason as the rest of the reviewers. Ruolan's character as a child was somewhat believable but when we saw older Roulan somehow I was hoping she would have changed. Since she didn't, I didn't understand how Wu Fei would feel so strongly for her and I couldn't connect with the later part of the series where she played an important role as a damsel in distress.

I think this movie is stupid and for all who want to buy this movie please think twice. hu fie character is ok. Athena is too old and ugly for her role. Gullian chang is annoying. as much as i like an yi xuan, i don't like her one bit in this movie. over all this movie is bad. i personal think the old one playing by sunny chan and chairman shed is better. as much as i dislike chairman, i still think the story line is way better then this new one.
I don't understand why they keep remaking old movie instead of new one and hoping that the new one will be better. this movie and return of the condor hero 2006 prove that the old one is way better. over all rating, i rate this movie as horrible. i don't like it one bit. if i know that it will be this bad i would never spend $60 buying it. for those who still want to buy this. please consider again.
