Nominated for the Best Foreign Language Films Oscar and a winner of various Cesars . Set in occupied France during World War II . The Last Metro tells the story of Marion Steiner (Catherine Deneuve ) , who manages the Theatre Montmarte in the stead of her Jewish husband , director Lucas Steiner (Heinz Bennert) . He has reportedly fled France but is really hiding out in the basement of the theater . The only hope to save the troups is a new play starring the dynamic and renowned actor , Bernard Granger (Gerard Depatdieu) , to whom Marion is attracted . As usual , Truffaut manages to create tension and drama from such conflicting emotions and dilemma .
