　　芙蓉鎮山清水秀，民風淳樸。鎮上女子胡玉音跟丈夫黎桂桂以賣米豆腐為生，本來生活不錯，可是郤在1964年「四清」運動中，被李國香為首的工作組打成「新富農」，新屋被沒收，桂桂亦自殺。胡玉音為了生計，唯有做掃街的工作，後認識了歌舞團編導秦書田，兩人相戀，然而厄運又一次降臨在她身上，她因難產險遭喪命，秦書田亦因和她結婚而被判刑十年，使她陷入絕境……
