G.I. Samurai (Hong Kong Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

What happens when modern soldiers and 16th-century samurai meet on the same battlefield? Directed by Saito Mitsumasa (Ninja Wars), 1979 sci-fi samurai war film G.I. Samurai readily mixes genres and weaponry for an action-packed journey with equal doses of spectacle and melodrama. Adapted from Hanmura Ryo's manga series, G.I. Samurai (a.k.a. Sengoku Jieitai) brings a group of soldiers back to feudal Japan for some historical tinkering and large-scale fighting. With the great Sonny Chiba in the leading role, the film is a wildly entertaining, innovative, and indulgent popcorn cult classic with incredible battle scenes and a twist-filled plot. The film gained renewed attention when the story was remade again in 2005 into Samurai Commando: Mission 1549.

A group of Self-Defense Force soldiers, led by Iba Yoshiaka (Sonny Chiba), are mysteriously transported in time to 16th-century Japan, along with their modern weaponry. Befriending charismatic warlord Kagatori Nagao (Natsuki Isao), Iba and crew find themselves in the midst of a war between rival samurai clans. The soldiers' reactions to their perplexing situation range from desperate breakdowns to riotous indiscipline, while Iba tries his best to hold the unit together. A born warrior, Iba not only adapts to the warring era, he readily becomes a part of the bloodshed and powerplay. When the soldiers join Kagatori in battle, tanks and helicopters are pit against spears and swords, but just modern technology is not enough in the face of a formidable samurai army.

Swords vs. bazookas! Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"G.I. Samurai" is a blast! A group of Japan's Self-Defence Forces mysteriously is transported back 400 years to the time when Japan was tearing itself apart in civil war. After the 20th century forces adjust to their surroundings, they start to "go native", falling in love with the 16th century women and fighting amongst themselves.

The Self-Defence Forces are led by Iba Yoshiaka (Sonny Chiba) who "goes native" in his own way. Iba develops a kind of man-crush for warlord Kagatori Nagao. He decides to throw his troops behind Kagatori's efforts to take over Japan. Iba sees himself joining in the rule of 16th century Japan. Will he realize this bizarre dream?

Sonny Chiba gives another of his commanding performances as the gonzo super-warrior Iba. The film serves up endless amazing battle scenes, featuring tangles between sword- and arrow-wielding 16th century troops and 20th century forces lobbing hand grenades and shooting machine guns from tanks and helicopters. It is quite a sight!

Yes, the premise of "G.I. Samurai" is outrageous, but, trust me, within a few minutes you will have bought into the story and will be enjoying every rollicking minute of it. I could do without all the dated pop songs that clog the film, but that's about the only qualm I have about this wild tale. I highly recommend "G.I. Samurai".
