Flying Family Fun!

This is a great movie for 8 year old boys, the monster action is cool and the hero is a young lad who they can identify with. It is also great for anyone looking for family entertainment. The kid is not annoying and is quite a good little actor as are his friends who help the little turtle (tortoise?) grow up to be a fireball spitting, world saving, flying Gamera! This is like a superhero origin story, how Gamera comes to be the hero he is, and he needs help from the children to achieve his greatness. The scene of children running against the screaming hordes through the wrecked city can be a bit sugary but it works for me. The evil monster, the reptillian Zedus, is a good design without being too scary and the grown up Gamera looks great in a well filmed city battle. A good film to watch with the kids. |

Surpasses All Expectations!

The 60s proved to be a cheap and chinsy time for Gamera. The 90s showed his darker and more developed side. And now we have this. For most fans it's a treat, but if you were expecting a darker feeling (like was imbued by Gamera 3 - Revenge of Iris) you may be dissapointed. This time the main character whom discovers Gamera is a young boy and the movie progresses to cater to that age as well. But even so, the plot and characters are developed and realistic. I originally believed that this outing was going to be cheesy, but was totally wrong as I found that it was dramatic and even touching, without being too corny or boring. The main bad guy, Zedus, also harkens back to monsters of old creating an almost nostalgic feeling. In the end, the film proves that the producers and owners of the Gamera franchise are much better at creating new story lines than the recent ill-fated Godzilla arcs could ever hope to be. It was an all around tour de force. Hopefully we'll be treated to another film from this series! TWO THUMBS WAY UP! |

Packaging: The packaging was real nice. Similar to the recent Godzilla Heisei R3 discs UL released. You pull the dvd case from a cardboard case(just like the G discs), but you pull it from the side instead of up or down. I really liked the packaging. The cardboard case looks exactly like the dvd case, but that's fine. A+ 5/5 on the packaging Video: The video is perfect. There was no grain, and the picture was not blurry or anything like that. It's in its original aspect ratio as well. A+ 5/5 on the video quality. Sound: The sound was great as well. Comes with 5.1 surround sound. Everyone should know that theres no English dub. Nothing wrong. A+ 5/5 on sound Subtitles: Comes with three options, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and English. I don't know what there actually saying in Japanese but the English subtitles were good. There was a scene when Toto(Gamera) was stuck in the building and the boy(Toru) was screaming "Toto.." but the subs were saying, "Ah.." instead. Kinda made me laugh, but that was the only problem. 5/5 on subs. On the back of the case it does say the subtitles are based off the japanese version. Special Features: It has a Gamera: The Brave trailer that had english subs, so I was happy about that. Also had a phot gallery, which were only pictures from the movie itself, nothing behind the scenes. Has scene selections. Pretty basic. 4/5 Overall: It was a real nice release in my opinion. The main thing to me was how good the picture and sound quality was. Cheap way to get the new Gamera movie, which has english subs. I easily recommend this DVD release. 5/5 The movie: The movie itself was just "ok," to me. It's definately not as good as the 90's Gamera trilogy, but ok none the less. It's an alright story as well. 4/5 for the movie itself. |
