スラム街の黒人たちの生活と清貧の純愛を描いたガーシュウィン晩年の最高傑作であり、20世紀の代表的なアメリカ・オペラでもある「ポーギーとベス」。本作は、「グラインドボーン・フェスティバル」で上演され大好評を博した舞台を改めて大規模なセットを組み直し、オリジナル・キャストの殆どを集めて1992年にスタジオ撮影した、「ポーギーとベス」の全幕を収録した初の映像作品である。ガーシュウィンのスコアを瑞々しく再構築しているサイモン・ラトルも見事だが、それにも増して多くの実力派歌手たちの熱唱は圧巻。演出は「キャッツ」「レ・ミゼラブル」などのトレバー・ナンが手がけている。
