Ever wondered what would happen if somebody crossed A Better Tomorrow with A Chinese Ghost Story? Director Wilson Tong apparently did, and the result is Ghost Ballroom, a surprisingly serious genre mishmash from 1989. Not that there aren't ample bits of comedy; Tong's regular collaborators Gordon Liu (36th Chamber of Shaolin) and Norman Tsui (Duel to the Death) are clearly having a lot of fun mugging it up as a pair of tough but easily-spooked guys who get drafted by the ghost of a dancing girl to help take revenge on the gangster who had her killed. Tong's taste for triad action keeps things gritty, although Ghost Ballroom is clearly a dry run for his later afterlife drama, 1995's poignant Ghostly Bus.

Nightclub dancer May (Chan Wing Chi) pays the ultimate price for snitching on her triad boyfriend, who has her brutally murdered after she talks to the police. Unable to rest until justice is served, May's spirit waits for a chance to get even, but a holy talisman prevents the ghost from getting close to her intended victim. May takes to haunting her two former roommates, whose street-smart boyfriends (Liu and Tsui) eventually agree to help the slain dancing girl wreak her otherworldly vengeance on the triads.

A dancing girl called May who worked in a ballroom under the control of the triad. One day May was forced to entertain a lecherous man, she reported to the police of the illegal business in Sun Tiu's gang. Sun Tiu sent a few fierce men to kill May and she was killed by one of the thugs. May wanted to kill Sun Tiu, but he was protected by a blessed thing. Then May asked Kai Mo, Tang Tak Po and King Chau to help her. They set trap together to destroy Sun Tiu' bless thing......
