An extension of the same world as that of Oshii Mamoru's Ghost in the Shell, the 26-episode anime series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex follows an alternate storyline more closely adapted from Shiro Masamune's original manga. Set in the year 2030, the series revolves around the members of Section 9, an elite crime-fighting unit specializing in technology-related crimes ranging from terrorism to cyber crimes to politcal conspiracies. Through stunning animation and acute storylines, Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. presents a complex and searing vision of a technologically advanced future, looking at how technology affects society, government, and public security.

The series is divided into "Stand Alone" and "Complex" episodes. "Stand Alone" episodes follow individual cases that emerge, and can be viewed as "stand alone" stories. They help to paint a more comprehensive vision of the world of the future, but do not link together into an overarching storyline. "Complex" episodes center around a long-running investigation of the notorious and elusive hacker Laughing Man.

　　著名動畫導演押井守將士郎正宗的漫畫拍成動畫，背景是資訊網絡覆蓋一切的2032年，人類的身體每一部份都可以電子化，甚至連腦都可以換成直接連接網絡的電子腦，「自我」和道德」就只剩留下在電子腦內的靈魂。這就讓黑黑能進攻人的腦裡，控制他們犯罪。專門打擊這類黑客罪案的攻殼機動隊，其中一個特警草薙素子在追查頭號黑客「木偶大師」的同時，原來已被「木偶大師」鎖定追蹤。後來雙方終於碰頭，可是「木偶大師」原來沒有軀殼，而且還有別的動機。

　　The story takes place in the year 2032 and the line between humans and machines has been blurred almost beyond distinction. Humans have forgotten that they are human and those that are left coexist with cyborgs (human spirits inhabiting entirely mechanized bodies) and dolls (robots with no human elements at all).

　　Batou, a cyborg and a detective for the government's covert anti-terrorist unit, Public Security Section 9, is investigating the case of a gynoid - a hyper-real female robot created specifically for sexual companionship - who malfunctions and slaughters her owner.
