Ghost Soup (Japan Version - English Subtitles) DVD Region 2

From director Shunji Iwai (Swallowtail Butterfly, Hana and Alice) comes Ghost Soup, a 1992 television film made before the director achieved international recognition. College student Ichiro (Horoyuki Watari) is moving during the winter break, and agrees to leave his old apartment early to help out others. He moves into his new place on Christmas Eve ahead of schedule, only to be inundated by annoying salesmen, and finally an odd couple consisting of teenage girl Nana (Ranran Suzuki) and older friend Mel (Dave Spector). The two strangely-dressed and odd-mannered people claim that Ichiro's premature move conflicts with their plans to hold a Christmas Party in his house. Annoyed, Ichiro gets rid of the couple and their three wordless friends, but they won't go so quickly. Something else is going on besides a group of odd people wanting a party, and it has something to do with something called "Ghost Soup!" Full of amiable comedy and endearing characters and situations, Ghost Soup is an enjoyable early work from Shunji Iwai that possesses the same sensitive, popular style that's made him one of Japan's most influential modern filmmakers.
