18世紀末のスペイン。画家のゴヤは国王カルロス4世の宮廷画家に任命されながら、権力批判や社会風刺をテーマにした作品にも挑んでいた。そんなある日、裕福な商人の娘でゴヤの"ミューズ"でもあるイネスが、異端の疑いを受けて拘束されてしまう。ゴヤからイネスの救出を頼まれたロレンソは、拷問を受けて牢に繋がれたイネスに面会して…。
「アマデウス」の巨匠ミロス・フォアマンが、18世紀末から19世紀前半の動乱のスペインを背景に、スペインの天才画家・ゴヤを通して描いた重厚な人間ドラマ。多くの人々に無実の罪を着せたスペインの異端審問をテーマに、人間と教会の真の姿、その狭間で揺れる愛の本質を映し出している。ゴヤの肖像画のモデルであり、数奇な運命をたどる架空の人物を、オスカー俳優のハビエル・バルデムと実力派女優のナタリー・ポートマンが熱演。
