Following the violent exploits of amoral gangster Rikio Ishikawa (Tetsuya Watari) as he deals in the sordid underworlds of drugs, murder, and prostitution, Fukasaku charts the yakuza's daily brush with dehumanizing criminal activities that inexorably strip him of honor and drive him toward spiritual madness. Remade by bad-boy auteur Takashi Miike in 2002.
