Graveyard Of Honor (US Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Known for his stylized, true-to-life chronicles of the Japanese yakuza, cult director Kinji Fukasaku (BATTLE ROYALE, TORA! TORA! TORA!) offers a brutal indictment of the soul-numbing yakuza lifestyle in his 1975 classic GRAVEYARD OF HONOR. Following the violent exploits of amoral gangster Rikio Ishikawa (Tetsuya Watari) as he deals in the sordid underworlds of drugs, murder, and prostitution, Fukasaku charts the yakuza's daily brush with dehumanizing criminal activities that inexorably strip him of honor and drive him toward spiritual madness. Remade by bad-boy auteur Takashi Miike in 2002.

Unromanticized slice of yakuza life Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Graveyard of Honor" is yet another documentary-style film of post-World War II yakuza life directed by Fukasaku Kinji. Watari Tetsuya stars as Ishikawa Rikio, whose violent tendencies first make him an up-and-coming star among yakuza, coveted by a rival gang. However, the sheer willfulness of this impulsive, undisciplined mobster ultimately make him an outcast in the gangster world.

Fukasaku's presentation of his lead character is peculiar. The viewer is shut out almost totally from Rikio's interior life; Fukasaku even has the character where aviator sunglasses throughout most of the film, so we seldom see Rikio's eyes. The viewer must draw conclusions about Rikio's nihilistic behavior from his actions. Clearly, Rikio is reacting to the topsy-turvy humiliation of occupied Japan. He also is seeking to fill an emptyness he feels in his life, an emptyness he first seeks to fill by embracing the pretty, but consumptive, hooker Chieko (Takagami Yuki) and eventually simply numbs by becoming addicted to heroin.

It is this addiction to heroin that sets this film apart in the Fukasaku canon of work and it is a problematic plot element. Prior to Rikio becoming addicted, "Graveyard of Honor" closely resembles the earlier Fukasaku movie, "Street Mobster". After Rikio becomes addicted, the film itself sinks into the lassitude of a junkie. The addicted Rikio often is depicted seated and slumped over, with his face nearly touching the floor. This sinks much of the last half-hour of the film into an uncompelling torpor, although a late scene in which Rikio munches on the cremated remains of Chieko just before committing one last spasm of vengeful violence is unforgettable.

While this is not among Fukasaku's greatest films, "Graveyard of Honor" is well worth watching and I can recommend it highly to fans of the genre.
