YesAsia Editorial Description
Acclaimed for his Crazy English and Beijing Bastards which shows serious concerns for social issues, Director Chang Yuan later turned to something lighter. In 2003 he produced a beautifully photographed and intriguing romance - Green Tea. The film stars famous actor/director Jiang Wen and pretty girl Vicky Zhao, and together both manage to glue the viewers' eyes to the screen for 85 minutes. Christopher Doyle, Green Tea's cinemagtographer who is famous for working with Wong Kar Wai, uses exquisite framing to narrate a story between a modern couple in the most aesthetic way. The music from famous composer Su Chong also helps to create a spectacular mood for the movie. Enjoy the refreshing and satisfying Green Tea!
Vicky Zhao is a bookish graduate student Wu Fang going on blind dates with men. Every time when she meets a man in coffee shops or bars, she always orders a cup of green tea, believing that green tea will show her the way to find her true love. Then she meets a lovelorn man Chen Mingliang (Jiang Wen), who is an expert in dealing with women. Confident as he is, Chen soon discovers that he might not be in control of this love game...

A Chinese 'Tales of 1001 Nights'?
|
"Green Tea" is an oblique love story in which conversation becomes a kind of foreplay. Zhao Wei plays bespectacled graduate student Wu Fang, who is on a mission to find a husband via a seemingly unending series of blind dates. Jiang Wen is Chen Mingliang, an artist trying to pick up the pieces after his fiancee has dumped him for another man. Mingliang's blind date with Wu Fang goes badly; he is too brash and pushy for the conservative Wu Fang's tastes. Mingliang, however, is smitten and he persists in his pursuit of Wu Fang. They develop an odd relationship in which Mingliang pursues, Wu Fang appeases him by telling him odd stories (echoes of "The Arabian Nights"?), then she once again slips away. Things take a strange turn when one of Mingliang's friends takes him to a nightclub to see the hot young pianist over whom all the men have been drooling. It turns out that the sexy piano player looks (and sounds) just like Wu Fang! Are these two separate women or is Wu Fang leading a double life, one as a repressed grad student and one as a vivacious nightclub performer? I found this subplot involving the pianist to be a distraction, but it does give Zhao Wei an opportunity to show off her impressive acting chops. Indeed, both Vicki and Jiang Wen do a superb job of bringing their characters to life. "Green Tea" is not for everyone; many may find it simply tedious. On the other hand, those who enjoy arthouse cinema likely will love the teasing talkiness of it all. I certainly did! |

Good!
| A really good-romatic film for those who love art movie. Vicki acts very well in this movie. Although the story is simple but she tries to bring everyone into a very "special moments". |

Great simple movie
| This is a very simple movie but that is exactly what makes it great. The chemistry and human interaction is the most interesting thing. Both stars did a great job. |

A mediocre film
A mediocre film
| It is so very disappointing! The storyline is boring me to death! The direct attempted to make a mysterious atmosphere. But he did a terrible job. Some viewers say this film is literary. It takes time to understand the meaning of the film. Oh! I don't think so. A good moive should draw and keep up viewers attention or bring some deeper meaning from ordinary life. But this film does nothing good. I regret that Vicky acted this film. I tried my best to finish it. But honestly, it is so very boring!!! |
