2007年4月からテレビ東京系にて放送された「天元突破グレンラガン」は、「新世紀エヴァンゲリオン」を生み出したガイナックスによる新たなロボットアニメ叙事詩。スタッフにはガイナックスの精鋭アニメーターたちがこぞって参加する他、シリーズ構成・脚本を劇団☆新感線の中島かずきが担当。舞台は、人々が地中に穴を掘って家を造り、家畜を飼い、息を潜めるように暮らす遥かな未来。村を広げるため穴を掘っていた少年・シモンが不思議に光る小さなドリルを見つけた事から、運命の歯車が回り始める。ガイナックスと中島かずきの最強タッグによる、怒涛のロボット・アニメーションである。オープニング主題歌をマルチタレント、"しょこたん"こと中川翔子が歌った事でも話題となった。
