2006年4月からテレビ東京系列で放送された、サイバー・ネットワーク・アニメ「.hack」のTVシリーズ第3弾。突然の異変によって現実世界と複雑に絡み合うようになったネットゲーム空間"The World"を舞台に、謎めいた物語が展開して、多くのファンを生み出した。また、「.hack」シリーズはアニメのみならず、ゲームやコミックなどとリンクした大規模なメディアミックス・プロジェクトとして広まり、先に制作されたTVシリーズも好評を博している。
本作は、2006年5月にリリースされたPS2用ゲーム「.hack//G.U.」と共通の主人公"ハセヲ"を軸に、オンラインゲーム"The World"内で起こる事件を描いたコラボ・アニメーション。スタッフには実力派メンバーが結集し、「G.U.」の根源に迫る"ルーツ"の謎に迫っていく。
世界規模で普及した、人気オンラインゲーム"The World R:2"（リヴィジョン2）。そのゲーム世界に、初めてプレイヤーとしてログインしたハセヲは、早くもPK（プレイヤーキラー）に殺されてしまう。そんな彼の蘇生を助けてくれたのが、左腕に異形のデザインをもつPC（プレイヤーキャラ）オーヴァンだった。同じプレイヤーを殺すPK行為をはじめ、多くの無法者が集う今の"The World"に、嫌悪感を抱くハセヲは…。
