Tony Leung Chiu Wai had his big film break in 1987 with People's Hero, which earned him a Best Supporting Actor trophy at the Hong Kong Film Awards. That same year, he also made the frenetic 80s-style comedy Happy Go Lucky. Still signed with TVB at the time, Tony Leung filmed this on the side for mentor and top television producer Li Tien Shing. The man behind classic TV dramas like Duke of Mt. Deer, The Yang's Saga, and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, Li made his first foray into feature film directing with Happy Go Lucky, and he especially picked Leung for the lead role. In contrast to his current image, Tony Leung was known more as a comedy actor during his early years because of all the mischievous characters he portrayed on television, and Happy Go Lucky plays to his comedic talents. The film also co-stars Danny Summer, Yammie Nam, Kara Hui, and Clarence Fok.

Wai (Tony Leung) works as a tow-truck driver for a financing company, but he often makes trouble because he doesn't like the way his unscrupulous boss, Ma (Danny Summer), does business. In contrast, Wai's supervisor and Ma's brother Kang (Clarence Fok) is fair and kind-hearted. Peeved that Ma is making advances on Kang's girlfriend Mina (Yammie Nam), Wai tries to act as a go-between for Kang and Mina, but ends up falling for her himself. Ma teams up with the triad to take revenge on Wai, and all scores get settled with a high-speed winner-takes-all car race!

阿偉(梁朝偉飾)受雇於人頭馬(夏韶聲飾)之利疊利財務公司為拖車工人，但其對人頭馬之高利貸手段極表反感。阿偉上司康少(霍耀良飾)乃人頭馬同父異母的哥哥，其性格優柔懦弱，女友美娜(藍潔瑛飾)美麗純良，常到公司探康少，人頭馬心有不甘，決意奪取美娜芳心。阿偉看不過眼，不時製造機會給康少，但康少原來鍾情另一女子積琪蓮(惠英紅飾)。人頭馬多次向美娜展開追求攻勢，始終不得逞，而阿偉與美娜接觸漸多，日久生情，竟雙雙墮入愛河。人頭馬見敗於阿偉手上，聯合黑幫繼承人康妮(麥翠嫻飾)陷害阿偉，並用電鋸殺之，最後人頭馬與阿偉作死亡賽車，結果阿偉憑機智賽贏，並協助康少取得公司之控制權，重建正當財務公司形象。

Wai is hired by a financial company to tow away repossessed cars. He does not like the loan sharking job and tells the boss Satyr the truth. Satyr now goes after Mena, the girlfriend of Wai's supervisor, while his supervisor falls for Jacqueline. Time goes by, Wai and Mena become lovers. Satyr gets the underworld's member to help killing Wai with a chain saw. The attempt fails, Satyr and Wai decide to have a car race to the death. Wai wins. He also returns the financial company to proper business.
