Brilliant
| Struggling and emotional, excellent artistic use of the camera angles, the colours and the music. No wonder it won at the Cannes festival in 1997. If i could, I would rate it 11/10 |

A True Winner in a Class of its Own.
A True Winner in a Class of its Own.
| Who would have deal with the homosexual topic more readily than Wong Kar Wai himself? Besides, we are talking about an Asian film, directed by an Asian, acted by Asians and filmed in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Argentina. Nope, I couldn't recall any earlier films that have challenged such a controversial content. First thing first, if you're homophobic, please, don't read on. Do remember invited a few friends to a free screening of the movie, a couple of whom actually felt like puking. Especially during the love making scenes. C'mon, love is not defined between a biological man and a biological woman. Love is an affection to be shared between two passionate individuals. It is a sacred journey and often does not come easily. And in Happy Together, this is precisely what the movie is about: Love and Home. This movie opens up the notion of love that it does exist between any consenting adults. And no matter where you are, who you are and how you deal with the break up, it's the same sensation. Probably, this is why it was shot mostly in Argentina, a country where we won't even thought much about linking with Asia. The waterfall scene is breathtaking. I have discussed with fans alike that the waterfall is probably a symoblic meaning for a pouring passion. Leslie and Tony were working towards making a trip to the falls, but during which, they broke up cos Leslie was flirting around. Eventually, Tony visited the falls alone. Another interesting character is Zhang Zheng, who plays a Taiwanese guy looking for the "end of the world" or rather the lowest tip of Argentina. He became a friend with Tony and thereby pushing the momentum of the film further that carries on til they depart from each other. Zhang went to the "end of the world" and Tony went to the Falls.Towards the end of the movie when Tony went to Taiwan and accidentally visited Zhang's parents, who opens a road side food stall. Nope, they never met again. Chris Doyle (cinematographer) is just excellent in the movie. There are a couple of interesting shots where by the movie was frozen for a second delibrately, possibly in my opinion, to signify the importance of the moments. For example, the moments when Zhang and Tony bid farewell in Argentina. All in all, the shots were very lush and soft. While Leslie did not give a too powerful performance, his existance in the first part of the movie is crucial. Cos his swinging moods set the pace of the movie and tested the patience of Tong as his lover. If you were expecting a reunion, well, you might be disappointed. |
