Happy Together (DVD) (Hong Kong Version) DVD Region All
YesAsia Editorial Description
Wong Kar Wai brings a lurid directorial style to Happy Together that's exciting and emotionally powerful. Aided and abetted by cinematographer Christopher Doyle, Happy Together leaps from the screen in an impressive blend of rich, passionate colors that bleed and fade into one another just like the two bickering lovers. A quirky, eclectic soundtrack, and brilliant acting from the two leads completes Wong Kar Wai's touching, pathetic ode to loves lost and loneliness suffered.
Co-starring Chang Chen, Happy Together was critically acclaimed upon release, and earned Wong Kar Wai a Best Director prize at the Cannes Film Festival. For his haunting, emotionally powerful work, Tony Leung Chiu Wai was awarded a Best Actor Prize at the 17th Annual Hong Kong Film Awards.

What it means to be happy?
|
A good movie is one that tells a good story and/or shed insight into the meaning of life. Happy Together is a story about a couple - how one left the other person, breaking the latter's heart; how they got back together and how the same person wanted to leave and the other person tried in vain to do everything to keep former by his side. It is a story about how a heartbroken man recover from a failed relationship. Like any heartbroken person, it takes time, new people and new places to get over a relationship. It is a story about how a person who tried to get away for greater adventure never found it because he couldn't get away from himself and how one can only truly move on if one make the first step to change yourself and step out. It is a story about how ironically one may not be happy when you are together with the person you love but how you do not need to be with the another to feel the friendship and love from him/her and be blessed and happy about it. It is a story about how to be happy. Happy Together is a brilliant movie. |

Great film, mediocre DVD
| I've finally had the chance to watch this film by Wong Kar Wai. [Happy Together] is very much about movement. The cyclic breaking up and getting back together of the two lovers Wing and Fai, the losing and acquiring of menial job and trick one after another, going to the waterfall, the lighthouse and back to Buenos Aires and Taipei. However bleak, life still moves on. Leung and Cheung do a wonderful job portraying the two on-off lovers as they navigate their messy relationship, and in the end, come to terms with the gradual separating of their lives. Chang Chen is good as well in the role of the cheerful young man that Fai befriends. Christopher Doyle does some really lovely work with the scenes and the colours. What lets the film down is the quality of the DVD, to be honest. While not exactly bad, Mei Ah can do much, much better in their treatment of this film. The subtitles are burnt into the film, and there are no scene-selections or anything. Just the film itself, and hard English/Mandarin subtitles. VERDICT : Get this if you're serious about watching the film. |

Another Masterpiece by Wong Kar-Wai
|
I have seen Happy Together a number of times and every time i watch it, i found something better. To understand the use of colors and feel the sadness of the movie, one viewing is not enough. This is a film about staying in love and fighting against all odds all by yourself. Even though the characters want to be a real couple desperately, they actually know that they're all alone and that their dreams of being happy will not come true. Happy Together is one of the most fashionable and visually impressive in history. Those amazing night scenes, beautiful directing of photography and marvellous use of the music makes Happy Together an experience which is really impossible to forget. Tony Leung and Leslie Cheung also deserve to be written about. They are the top two actors of asia, they give their finest performances to date in this film. Brilliant. You should live this expreince at least once. So get this dvd as quickly as possible. |

Has Wong Kar Wai Ever Done A Bad Movie?
|
I recently started watching Mr. Wong's movies once again due to the recent screening of "2046" in the States. I almost missed this one. I am very glad to have seen it. First, it's a love story and a well done and sad love story. It does not matter to me they happend to be about gay men. Both actors, Leslie Cheung and Tony Leung are fantastic in it. Parts were filmed in Argentina. The entire film is appropriately moody and atmospheric. Only Mr. Wong can do it so well. I find the movie deeply moving and I intepret the ending to be of hope. |

Wong Kar-Wai's Best Film
| Forget In the Mood for Love and Chungking Express, Happy Together is Wong Kar-Wai's best film ever! Its great story is complemented by excellent performances from Leslie Cheung Kwok-Wing, Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, and Chang Chen; great cinematography from Christopher Doyle; and an equally unforgettable soundtrack courtesy of Daniel Chung. I especially like his rendition of the the title song. Happy Together is the Wong Kar-Wai film to own. |
