台灣高雄某大飯店總經理高賓公務赴屏東，遇鄉女阿玉搭車同返高雄。阿玉投靠姐姐，惟姐夫失業多時，兒女成群，生活困難，阿玉不便久留，積極外出求職，某晚，適大飯店樓上夜總會演出巨型古典歌舞劇「嫦娥奔月」，阿玉欲入飯店觀賞歌舞被拒，高賓得知乃免招待參觀。
舞劇導演于文發現阿玉頗具藝術天才，經高賓推薦入選該歌舞團參加表演，阿玉喜極欲狂。
高賓妻琵琶別抱，藉故要求離婚，並苛索鉅額贍養費，高賓雖位居總座，但一向廉潔自持，無多積蓄，乃勉強付款十萬元，高太迫高賓以唯一之房產過戶，高賓自嘆相識恨晚，默然從命。高太騙取房契與他人雙飛國外，一去無蹤。
有商人邀于文執導「嫦娥奔月」之影片，高賓投資二十萬元助陣，有意栽培阿玉躍登銀幕，不料該片拍成後，以陳義過深曲高和寡，觀眾寥寥無幾，高賓所投資本盡付東流，同時並挪用公款供應劇務費玫使辛苦十餘年之服務成績一筆勾銷，高本人自慚形穢，乃向董事長提出辭呈，雖經董事長多方慰留，高賓執拗不允悄然而去。
阿玉之於高賓，芳心早早許矣，惟自忖懸殊不敢形之於表，及高賓出走，于文告明其投資真相，阿玉感激由衷，不能自持，乃跟隨于文由南而北萬里追尋，大都小鎮街頭巷尾，往返奔馳，情之所鍾，不以為苦。某日，于文、阿玉至台北綠島飯店留宿，高賓正應聘為該飯店之經理顧問，見二人同進出，誤以為于文阿玉戀愛成熟，乃避之他去，以免觸景傷情...
