In the years following Bruce Lee's hit 1972 film Fist Of Fury, a renewed sense of pride in Chinese nationalism took hold in the culture, a phenomenon that carried over to the realm of cinema, especially in Taiwan. Directed by Bao Xu Li (who also helmed such films as Finger Of Doom and The Imposter), Heroes Of The Underground is one such film that reflected this growing upswing in ethnic and cultural pride among the Chinese. Based on a script written by legendary filmmaker King Hu (A Touch of Zen), this 1974 film stars the popular Shaw Brothers star Jing Li (from Anonymous Heroes, When The Clouds Roll By, and The Boxer From Shangtung) and is set sometime during World War II.

Here, Jing portrays a dedicated secret agent for the Chinese government who finds herself smack dab in the middle of enemy territory, as she is assigned to infiltrate the Japanese HQ located in Changsha. Will this plucky Chinese 007 be able to serve her country with pride and take down the enemy from within? Or will the Japanese expose her identity and sabotage her mission? Featuring appearances by Ling Yun (from Haunted Tales, Flower in the Rain, and We Love Millionaires), Tin Ching (from Mad Mad Mad Sword, Intrigue in Nylons, and Springtime Affairs), and Frankie Wei Wang (from Five Tough Guys, 36 Secrets of Courtship, and The Flying Guillotine, director Bao Xu Li's Heroes of the Underground is a spy film that is sure to please action fans!

Besides martial arts, Bruce Lee's contribution to Chinese society was instilling a strong sense of nationalism. After his death, anti-Japanese films found new breathe especially in Taiwan. Based on King Hu's script, Heroes of The Underground tapped into Lee's nationalistic fervor and the Confucian ethic of country above family and starred the popular Ching Li as a World War II, Chinese secret agent planted into the Japanese Headquarters at Changsha. Tears flow in the name of country pride.
