18-year-old karate champion and idol Takeda Rina makes her film debut in the action-packed High-Kick Girl! True to the title, Takeda Rina kicks high - often in a short skirt - and shows off her lean, mean karate skills. Directed by Shaolin Girl producer and Black Belt action director Nishi Fuyuhiko, High-Kick Girl! may have a young and cute lead, but the action is plenty real. The film co-stars Black Belt stars Akihito Yagi and Naka Tatsuya, petite karate idol Kobayashi Yuka, martial arts champion Watanabe Hisae, D-BOYS member Takahashi Ryuki, and AKB48's Akimoto Sayaka, who holds a black belt in Aikido.

High-kicking 17-year-old schoolgirl Kei (Takeda Rina) can more than hold her own against the guys at her karate dojo, but her master Matsumura (Akihito Yagi) refuses to grant her a black belt because she hasn't learned all her forms. Leaving in a huff, Kei joins the combat group Destroyers, which cares about only one thing - fighting. Kei is perfectly happy with the arrangement, until she discovers that the Destroyers are out to get Matsumura.

    Thin story, but great fight scenes Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
    As a movie, "High Kick Girl!" is too simple-minded to generate much interest, but as a display of martial arts skills, "High Kick Girl!" is an absolute stunner. Teen karate champ Takeda Rina plays schoolgirl Kei, who studies karate under stern taskmaster Matsumura (Akihito Yagi). Although Kei's skills are impressive, Matsumura refuses to award her a black belt until she achieves technical perfection in the core techniques. Discouraged by the mind-numbing routine of reiterating those routines over and over again, Kei spends her free time scouting out black belts to beat up.

    Kei's friend tells her about the Destroyers, a gang of professional hitmen who are seeking a girl like her to join their ranks. Kei, apparently indifferent to evil nature of the Destroyers, agrees to be put to the test to see if she is sufficiently skilled to join them. But the test turns out to be a trap; Kei is captured by the Destroyers and used as bait to entice Matsumura to try to rescue her. Fifteen years earlier, Matsumura had destroyed an earlier edition of the Destroyers and now they want revenge. This set up leads to the inevitable showdown in which Matsumura squares off against a roomful of baddies to free his wayward student Kei. Carnage ensues.

    The story is awfully thin gruel, but the martial arts moves displayed by Akihito Yagi, Takeda Rina, and others are bone-crushingly spectacular. Frankly, I'm amazed that everyone involved didn't end up in the hospital! Some of the action in "High Kick Girl!" comes close to "Ong Bak" for sheer ferocity, although director Nishi Fuyuhiko's habit of replaying all the big moves in slow motion robs the action of its continuity. As good as the fight scenes in the film are, what is even better are the martial arts skills displayed in the DVD's special features. Those special features alone are worth the price of this movie. This is a 'must see' DVD for martial arts fans.
