First appearing in 2002 as an interactive visual novel, the murder mystery Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (a.k.a. When They Cry) has grown to become a minor industry, with a complete series of visual novels, console games, manga, light novels, and anime based on the property. Director Oikawa Ataru (Tomie) helms the first of live-action adaptations of the series, released in May 2008, with a second installment to come in 2009.

Young Keiichi (Maeda Goki) is a new arrival to the rural town of Hinamizawa, and meets four girls who quickly become his friends. He joins them in their afterschool activities and they introduce him to the town's peaceful, idyllic lifestyle. However, Hinamizawa has a secret, sinister history. Once a year, the town holds the Watanagashi Festival, intended to worship a local god, but in recent years the festival has been beset by tragedy. Every year, one person is murdered, and another goes missing. Keiichi attends the latest festival, but soon after it ends, he finds himself drawn into the mystery. Worse, one or more of his new friends may potentially be involved in the crimes...
