　　「無言的山丘」描述的內容正值(西元一九二七年左右)九份金瓜石最興旺的時期、也就是早期日據時代淘金者追求希望的生活和體驗。
　　阿助、阿尾兩兄弟是憨厚型的佃農子弟，為了父母的喪葬費只好賣身委曲於地主不合理的長工契約中，終因經不起金瓜石美麗淘金的傳聞、漏夜逃脫長工的束縛而投入整日不見陽光的坑洞中去挖掘他們兄弟共同的希望。
　　兄弟倆隨著淘金的人潮來到九份，投租在寡婦阿柔的陋屋裡，阿柔是一位有剋夫運的可憐女人，不到六年先後剋死兩位礦工的丈夫。阿柔只好認命地帶了幾個油瓶的小孩生活在這座山城裡。阿柔沒有理想沒有希望，只知道讓一家人圖溫飽，於是她從不選擇掙錢的方法、那怕是苦力、雜工、出賣靈肉這都是她生存的方法。
