A fantasy film set in exotic Tibet! Gorgeous Tibetan boy Pu Ba Jia, winner of a handsome contest in Mainland Chian, takes up the role of a Himalaya Prince, born to the ruler of Tibet. Set in ancient Tibet, the shooting of this film actually took place in the Tibetan highlands, and every member of the cast is Tibetan by birth. The story starts with the passing away of the emperor, whose ghost tells the crown prince (Pu Ba Jia) that he was killed by his younger brother who has succeeded the throne. The prince's mother falls in love with the new emperor and becomes the new queen. The young prince struggles whether he should revenge as instructed by his father's ghost, or to let his mother live happily ever after with his uncle.  Hamlet in the Himalayas Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Himalaya Prince" is a visually sumptuous Tibetan version of William Shakespeare's Hamlet. This is no slavish imitation of Shakespeare's tragedy; major liberties have been taken with the original story, such as the inclusion of two surprisingly graphic sex scenes and the addition of a back-story for Hamlet's mother and stepfather that turns them into quite sympathetic characters.

The cinematography is startlingly beautiful, particularly of the wide-open Tibetan vistas. The set decoration and costuming are a continual feast for the eyes. The Ophelia character's death scene is one of the most shockingly beautiful images I have ever seen.

The cast is lovely to look at, but the performances are something of a mixed bag. The actor who played the prince would have benefitted from greater subtlety in his performance. On the other hand, the actress who played his mother was absolutely riveting throughout the film. What a woman!

I highly recommend this movie for a mature audience. The vivid imagery and haunting music will stay with you for a long time. (And, at YesAsia's price, this film is an amazing bargain!)
