1947年に神奈川県に生まれた長谷川恒男は、'73年にエベレスト登山隊隊員として初めて海外登山を経験し、'75年、谷川岳一ノ倉沢に残された最後の冬季未踏ルートの登攀に成功。'77年から'79年にかけてヨーロッパ・アルプス3大北壁の冬季単独登攀を達成、さらに南米大陸最高峰アコンカグアやエベレストをはじめとするヒマラヤで、数々の困難な登攀に挑戦を続けた。'91年10月10日、パキスタン・ウルタル2峰登山中に雪崩により遭難。享年43。
