世界で初めて、冬期ヨーロッパ・アルプス三大北壁を単独で登った男—長谷川恒男。その記録を達成したグランドジョラス北壁での、孤独で過酷な戦いの記録。 １９７９年３月４日午前１０時３０分。グランドジョラス北壁ウォーカー稜に挑んだ長谷川恒男がそのピークに立ったとき、ヨーロッパ・アルプス三大北壁の冬期単独完登の記録は達成された。 本編「北壁に舞う」は、群雄割拠する登山界の中で頭角を現し、やがて単独登攀という手法を選んでいった稀有のクライマー長谷川恒男の、グランドジョラス北壁での８日間にわたる孤独で過酷な戦いを、ヘリコプター撮影の迫力ある映像と、長谷川自身がカセットに録音した臨場感溢れる音声を中心に、日本での準備段階から登頂までを記録した、長編ドキュメンタリー映画である。 松山善三の総監修のもとに、撮影は「白き氷河の果てに」の赤松威善、同作の阿久津悦夫、「美の美」のピエール・リギャル、明石太郎、フランソワ・シュニベスなどが担当している。
