YesAsia Editorial Description
Fantasy costume swordplay excess lives in Holy Flame of the Martial World, a 1983 Shaw Brothers special effects extravaganza! The Holy Flame is the most powerful weapon of the Martial Arts World, and everyone and their brother wants a piece of it. When a couple is killed guarding the Holy Flame's location, their orphaned son Wan Tien Sau is rescued by the Phantom (Philip Kwok, action director of The Brotherhood of the Wolf), who assures the killers that the boy will return one day to seek vengeance. However, the couple also had a daughter, who grows to adulthood thinking that the Phantom was responsible for her parents' death. Eventually, the adult Wan Tien Sau (Max Mok) must recover one of the two famed Holy Flame Swords, as well as save a damsel in distress, and duel his long-lost sister! Breathless pacing, extreme flying martial arts, and over-the-top comic book-style theatrics make Holy Flame of the Martial world an entertaining delight that's sure to charm audiences both young and old!

This internationally popular tale of a brother and sister seeking vengeance for the death of their parents through the mythical yin/yang Holy Flame technique is an eye-filling epic. Kuo Chue (a.k.a. Philip Kwok), famous as the star of Chang Cheh's internationally famous "venom: film series, both co-stars and choreographs this impressive tale - leading to a vaunted "action director" career with both the 007 thriller Tomorrow Never Dies and the cult classic Brotherhood of the Wolf to his credit.

A VERY FUN FILM
| I have to say that at first I was hesitant by some of the silliness of the film, especially with some of my favorite Shaw stars(Kuo Choi, Yeung Jing Jing, and Candy Wen). The fight scenes, although much like "Lady Assassin" are sped up ridiculously fast, the movie is quite entertaining.I really enjoyed the fact you get to see Yeung Jing Jing and Candy Wen fight each other, which is a Shaw first, and Lau Suet plays a villian convincingly well here.Kuo Choi's Ghostly Laughter is also rather entertaining. The camera work during the fight scene where Candy and Yeung are battling shows some really wonderful shots of Yeung and her amazing sword work. This one is worth checking out. |

so bad it's good!
|
This movie is just the opposite of Chu Yuan's swordplay epics. This one has a cartoonish quality about it as it is filled with laughable special effects but it's so bad it's good. Lau Suet Wah is marvellous as the central villain and she gets excellent support from Pai Piao, Max Mok & Candy Wen. I was surprised I liked it so much and I have not laughed so much in such a long time. |
