YesAsia Editorial Description
Japanese director Inoue Umetsugu helms Hong Kong Nocturne, a lavish musical of striking color and infectious song! Shaw Brothers screen princesses Lily Ho, Cheng Pei Pei and Chin Ping are the three dancing, singing assistants of their father, who runs a magic show. Unfortunately, the arrangement goes kaput when their father abandons them for his gold-digging girlfriend. But the girls aren't finished - in fact, they've just begun! On their own, they find new careers and new lives, with boyfriends, husbands, and many more surprises waiting in the wings.
One of Shaw Brothers studios must successful musicals, Hong Kong Nocturne absolutely shines when the characters begin singing and dancing in glorious Shawscope. Brilliant use of color, dazzling sets, and the lovely lead actresses light up the screen whenever a musical number occurs. Cheng Pei Pei (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) would go on to become a female martial arts star, and Hong Kong Nocturne shows off the ballet training that made her Shaw Brothers' most famous kung-fu princess!

Fun time capsule
| Inoue Umetsugu's Hong Kong Nocturne is a warm and fuzzy time capsule from the swinging sixties. Three showgirls(Lily Ho, Cheng Pei Pei, Chin Ping) try to survive on their own after they abandon their father. This is a Shaw Brothers produced remake of one of his Japanese films. As someone at another website points out, Hong Kong Nocturne is lightweight and colorful, yet it still has an undercurrent of melancholy and sadness. Another great thing about the film is it has this warm, fuzzy feeling of nostalgia(people smoke like fiends, Go Go music, toll phones, etc.). HKN isn't a masterpiece per se, but it is solid entertainment from a lost era in Hong Kong cinema. |

One of the best movies by Inoue Umetsugu
|
This is the first batch of Shaw Brothers Movies which have turned into DVD/VCDs for sales at the year of 2000. This movie is about a magician father and her three lovely daughters, Lily Ho, Cheng Pei Pei and Chin Ping. This is one of the best dancing and singing movies which was directed by Inoue Umetsugu. Definitely, it is a collection for Lily, Pei-Pei and Chin Ping fans, worth buying. |

Hong Kong Nocturne - Thoughts in a Capsule
| A now refreshing and visual feast to the eyes to those who only know Hong Kong Cinema of the last 15 years by young television trained turks who only knew the dull blue sepia tones of the Salon film stock, the 1.85 camera ratio and the hurried pace of pre-1997 cultural impatience. This was mannered film craftsmanship by studio import Inoue Umetsugu sensei, an underrated personality of Hong Kong films who lent his own gaudy high gloss Japanese Hollywood style reminiscent of the works of his fellow contemporaries Fukusaku, Masamura and Suzuki to the "Eastmancolour" trademark of Sir Run Run's legacy. Yes, the innocent sensibilities of the content is cliched and dated, but so was the content of Jacques Demy and Rodgers & Hammerstein. Except for the Go-Go numbers and anything crooned from that magical rooftop set, the tunes from Nocturne are not as catchy and memorable as those from Blue Skies or Hong Kong Rhapsody. This was not dramatic best for Peter Chen Ho (Sons of the Good Earth was), Lily Ho (My Dream Boat), Chin Ping (Price of Love) or Cheng Pei Pei (Lover's Rock) but this was signature for character actor Chiang Kwong Chao as one of his best. Hong Kong Nocturne is a befitting ensemble entre for the uninitiated and martial arts saturated to usher in the many lost classics that help define Shaw's Golden Age. |

Mandarin audio 1.0 ???
|
Only the actors have saved this dvd, the fans have possibly fallen victim to the charms of Cheng Pei Pei, Lily Ho & Chen Ping in this musical. They gave an outstanding performance and left much to be desired. The film was correctly remastered, but our Mandarin audio 5.1 has a serious problem. The center channel is too noisy and the sound reaches saturation point. The front & surround channels are as silent as the tomb. What a Pity ! Please, don't sacrifice anything ! Dvd is supposed to be a precious support. We have to respect its quality standard. |

Excellent Musical
| When I was growing up, I remember singing along to the marvellous songs in this musical. Tsin Ting really sang her heart out & immortalised the songs. Cheng Pei Pei, Lily Ho & Chin Ping all gave their best efforts in this excellent musical which deserves its rerelease on DVD. All 3 girls deserve equal billing despite the fact that Lily Ho did not yet hit her peak until after this movie. By the way, handsome Ling Yun is another good reason to buy this DVD. |
