The Horse Thief is the third film from acclaimed Fifth Generation director Tian Zhuangzhuang (Blue Kite, The Go Master). After catching international eyes in 1984 with On the Hunting Ground, a documentary-style film about Mongolian minorities, Tian shifted his camera to Tibet, stunningly capturing life and rituals in the Tibetan hinterland. Both a detailed ethnographic study and a cinematic masterpiece, the film meditates on themes of religion, ritual, retribution, and redemption through a simple story and spare dialogue. The stunning photography captures an arresting landscape closed to outside eyes, a world that is as stark and barren as it is beautiful and majestic. Tian's portrayal of the impoverished lives of Tibetans brought the director into brushes with government censors, leading The Horse Thief to be banned in China for many years, though it is now celebrated as one of the most representative works of the Fifth Generation.

Norbu (Tseshang Rigzin) is a deeply religious man whose life is bound by rituals and prayers. However, in order to support his family, he resorts to stealing horses, bringing him into conflict with his faith and his tribe. As retribution for his crimes, Norbu and his family are expelled from the tribe, and must eke out a difficult, isolated existence in the harsh, unforgiving environment. Norbu makes a sacred vow to never steal again, but with the lives of his starving family members at stake, he is again faced with the conflict between faith and survival.
