Uplifting and entertaining

"Hula Girls" tells the true story of a down-and-out northern coal-mining town that makes the astonishing decision to seek its future in a Hawaiian-style spa resort, featuring entertainment by hula-dancing women. The seemingly crazy idea meets the kind of resistance one might expect, including the notion that women shouldn't do such a dance. Matsuyuki Yasuko gives a tremendous performance as the world-weary dancer who is brought into town to train the crew of hula dancers. Aoi Yu is sparkling as the spunky girl who overcomes her mother's resistance to become the star pupil. Just as she did in "Hana and Alice", Yu-chan dazzles with her dance moves. "Hula Girls" does a fine job of capturing a sense of time and place and bringing this improbable true story to life. Yes, it is sentimental, perhaps even a bit manipulative, but the inspiring tale is told with integrity and will have you cheering at the end. This is why we love movies! I recommend "Hula Girls" wholeheartedly for everyone. |
