A grisly combination of swordplay action and creepy horror, Human Lanterns features one of the most memorable villains in Shaw Brothers history: a bitter craftsman who fashions lanterns out of human skin! Chun Fang (Shaw Brothers regular Law Lit) is the disturbed individual, a former swordsman who was once defeated and scarred by swordsman Lung (Lau Wing). Years later, he's asked by Lung to make a lantern for him, and with vengeance still in his heart, he decides to use human skin from Lung's wife and mistress to craft the lantern! Events take an even deadlier turn when Chun Fang makes use of the sister of Tan Fu (Chan Koon Tai), one of Lung's rivals, to continue his grisly work. Tan Fu and Lung turn on one another, while Chun Fang remains free, lurking in the shadows awaiting his next victim. A macabre variation on the swordplay genre, Human Lanterns entertains and unnerves with its unique mix of genres and energetic, violent swordplay action!

Shaw Brothers made martial arts movies, and Shaw Brothers made horror movies, but when they made martial arts horror movies they really struck gold. Slowly, these shivery action flicks are being unearthed from the Shaw Brothers vaults and as each one is exposed to the light it gleams like pure gold. Human Lanterns (also known as Human Skin Lanterns) is a Technicolored marvel that looks like the kind of movie MGM would have produced if it had suddenly stopped making movies in the 1950s and started making horror flicks: a lush, beautifully lit emotional epic that unfolds on a series of gargantuan soundstages. Chen Kuan-tai and Liu Yung play two tetchy noblemen locked in a long-running game of one-upmanship, each trying to humiliate the other with his wealth, good taste and refinement or his martial skills. Their entire village is pretty sick of their antics that long ago spiraled out of control but these guys are gentlemen of leisure and no matter how many fights they pick or how many high balconies they leap off of, all they get from the chief of police (Sun Chien) is a slap on the wrist. Things start getting dark when the Lantern Festival approaches and one of these posh toffs gets a nutty lantern maker (creepily played by Lo Lieh) to come up with a gorgeous lantern thatll shame his rival. Lo needs the best raw materials for his lantern, and so he starts stripping the skin from his patrons loved ones to make his masterpiece. Flayed beauties start turning up all over town and it takes a series of boot-to-face sessions before the evil is tracked to ground in the lantern-makers workshop/torture dungeon. The scariest thing in this flick is Lo Lieh as the nutty craftsman. His relentless violence is the kind of unstoppable sadism that comes right out of a nightmare. By Grady Hendrix |

Action + horror = fun!
| In my humble opinion, this is the greatest human skin lantern movie of all time! Seriously, one might expect a movie of this nature to have been filmed on the cheap. However, Shaw Brothers definitely did not skimp. The movie has gorgeous sets, sumptuous costuming, top-notch martial arts choreography, and a stellar cast. Particular credit should be given to the amazing work done by the anonymous stuntman who played Lo Lieh's costumed character. Personally, I didn't mind that the goriest bits have been deleted from this print of the movie, although I do have to downgrade the film a bit for the ham-handed quality of those edits. Recommended. |

Butchered!

I was looking forward to this movie as it is a cult classic but Celestial has released a censored print. Even the back cover scene is cut from the dvd. Moreoever the cuts are done very badly. One minute Tien Ni is alive & screaming & the next she appears to have been dead for some time. On the plus side, the story is good & intriguing ; the stars shine in their respective roles.The costumes are beautiful as always in a Shaw production. |

Cut, but still good

There are several cuts in the movie, including an well-known, horrorific scene, but it's still worth watching. I was kind of disappointed however, as I was hoping for a restored version. |

Human Lanterns
| An 80's swordsfighting movie filled with horror, suspends and thrillers. SB stars as Liu Yong, Chen Kwan Tai, Lo Lieh and Tien Ni had contributed to the success of this movie. However, Singapore VCD's version were censored with few scary scences, but it does not disrupt the strong story plot. Worth watching. |
