Based on the writings of a Japanese WWII soldier executed for war crime, the curiously titled I Want to be a Shellfish is a momentous, heartrending drama about a family man whose life is cruelly upturned by war. I Want to be a Shellfish was first adapted for television in 1958 and turned into a massive hit, so much so that it traveled to the big screen the following year in a film directed by Rashomon screenwriter Hashimoto Shinobu. For the 50th anniversary of the first television adaptation, TBS remade the story once again with SMAP's Nakai Masahiro in the leading role.

Better known as a funnyman pop idol, Nakai makes a serious turn as barber Shimizu Toyomatsu, a normal, affable guy making ends meet with his wife and son. He is content with life in his small fishing village, but war soon comes knocking on the door. Though he has a limp, Shimizu gets drafted into the army to serve on the home front, experiencing firsthand the brutality and tragedy of war and militarism. More than anything, Shimizu wishes to return to a peaceful life free from war, but at the war's end, he is arrested as a war criminal for having executed an American POW by order of his commanding officer.

Helmed by television director Fukuzawa Katsuo (Good Luck!!) and scripted by Hashimoto Shinobu himself, I Want to be a Shellfish co-stars popular television actress Nakama Yukie (Gokusen) as Shimizu's dedicated wife. Featuring a score by master composer Hisaishi Joe, the film makes an impassioned and moving testament against war through the harrowing experiences of a war criminal who should have never been.
