June 24, 2008 Still Waiting For The DVD...Great Series, this help spawn Lau Ching Wan's movie carreer. Story was touching, the actors were brilliantly cast. A masterpiece. But with all the people praising it why haven't the DVD came out yet. This is my little theory to it...
When TVB finally decided to pushed these vcds out, the market was changing rapidly, with the computer boom, and rising sales of DVDs... "Plain and Simple," TVB over printed this series in a bad quality format! Someone probably in a meeting said, "I want the best retouched quality in this vcd"(haha!! best quality in a vcd) and so it took a bit longer to released it. when it finally gets released, the market had a taste of the DVD quality, and guess what, we liked and never turned back since. The picture quality is 10 times better than the vcd and sound... lets just say it almost matched the video(back then) so with all these printed vcds and slow sales, they are really banging their head to the wall, because they do not want to mark it down too much in fear that if too many people own it, no one will buy the dvd version, and those who bought it will feel ripped-off, so they wait, kept it at a certain price and hope someday they will make enough profit to cover the loss of throwing away the left over vcd copies and start selling the DVD version. tick tock, tick tock, i am still waiting...Did you find this review helpful? June 24, 2008 To the young ones " Xiang"asides from it not being UNCUT series, this is my favorite series. i suggest the same like you, DO NOT BUY, WAIT FOR THE REAL UNCUT VERSION, just have the push the right button to get TVB's attention. Xiang, i mean this in the nice way... In case if you do not know, this was made in 1986, my guess is that you were not even born yet. techonology was not as advance as now, not only that, do you know they have very little budget to work with in these chinese tv series, not to say the least it's probably shot within 2-3 months only? What this makes this a classic is that the actors were brilliant, the storytelling was great, for the less amount of time and money, they were still able to capture the essense of the novel. one of hong kong's film trait is knowing how to stretch a dollar. i can tell you most of us who pick up these classic all know that about the cheezey props/set, and the bad 80's style costume, but we grew up with it, and loved it. for somebody who purchase an 80's tv series and expects 2008 quality... you're mocking yourself. and proved you did not know its these great classics build the foundations or set the bars for tv series made today, that is why you still see most of the actors in this series still big in Hong Kong. Plus great theme song by Miariam Yeung. It's of the the better Food base tv series, of course the best would have to be "Food of Love" starring Wong Hei. I have to say it is worth owning a copy of this series, and reason why it's a supprise hit is because of the casting. Before this series, most of the actors are more likely seen in those 50 and plus chapter-dramas, you never really believe they can act in a light-hearted base comedy. but their chemistry were there and compatiable. The story was supprisingly good(but ending was weak, of course, TVB doesn't seems to know how to write all their endings)
I believe this series was Mariam Yeung's ticket to her movie stardom. She really shine as just a suporting role. I saw her differently after this series.

August 8, 2007 THIS VERSION IS NOT UNCUT!!!!!THIS VERSION IS NOT UNCUT, AND THE REASON WHY I KNOW IS BECAUSE THIS IS MY FAVORITE TVB SERIES OF ALL TIME. I GREW UP WATCHING THIS. I HAVE AT LEAST WATCH THIS MORE THAN 50 TIMES OVER THE COURSE MY TWENTY SOMETHING ODD YEARS. THERE ARE SOME SCENES MISSING. THE MOST RECONIZALBE SCENE I CAUGHT MISSING WAS THE ENDING WHEN TONY LEUNG HANDED OVER HIS LEADERSHIP TO ONE OF HIS PROTEGE'. THEY CUT OUT THE PART WHEN HE HANDED OVER THE "HOLLY FIRE PLAQUE" ALONG WITH THE TWO MARTIAL ART BOOK, THE "GOU YANG SUN KUNG" AND THE "KEEN QUN DAI LAUR YE". THEY TOTALLY CUT THAT PART OUT AND JUST HAD HIM SAY IT AND THEN LEFT. HE ALSO HAD A LITTLE MOMENT WITH HIS UNCLE TOO, BUT THEY CUT THAT OUT AS WELL. I DON'T KNOW WHOSE FAULT IT IS BUT THIS IS DEFFINETLY NOT THE UN-CUT VERSION!!! VERY DISSAPOINTED, I NOT SURE IF I CAN TRUST ANOTHER TVB SERIES THAT'S TITLE UN-CUT. I DON'T WANT TO PURCHASE THOSE SERIES ANYMORE UNTIL TVB GETS IT RIGHT. AFTER 20 YEARS I THOUGHT I COULD OWN THE SERIES IN A HIGH QUALITY. I HAD WAITED SO LONG EVER SINCE DVD EXIST. August 8, 2007 One of my all time favorite!!!Loved the Police Cadet series, this first one is the best, Liked Tony Leung's acting, Maggie is adorable. I just wish TVB can release this in DVD format, uncut, "REALLY" uncut version. This comment is especially for the distributor who can get in touch to whoever's in charge with the releasing of classic TVB series. Let them know that customers are really angry with edited version they keep pushing out to the market. People whose willing to fork up the money most likely watch it before and over and over many times. With that said, are they forgetting that they still have VHS rental around to compare it with. especially here in USA, so please let us own a version that we all know exsit... the REAL FULL "UNEDITED" VERSION. i have to say, their sales would increase dramatically if they start releasing the Real UN-CUT version. I have not yet to purchase at least 5 title series because I heard they had edited it. Imagine the rest of the other customer that feel the same way as i do, they most certainly are looking at about 5 as well.
