During a long train ride heading the north of Japan, a young man addresses an older woman in front of him. At first she doesn't respond, but he finally gets her into a conversation when he offers her lunch. Thus begins Saito Koichi's famous romantic thriller, Le Rendezvous. The woman turns out to be a murderer on parole, whist the man a runaway accused of assault and robbery. As it happens, the two soon fall in love. The woman asks the man to wait two years, for then she will be released from jail. But unbeknown to her, he is arrested as soon as they part each other……
A sensuous film with stylish photography and a magnificent performance by Kishi Keiko , Le Rendezvous easily makes one recall the works of the French New Wave filmmakers, perhaps a Jean-Pierre Melville film directed by Claude Lelouch. In short, a gem in the truest sense of the word.

Engrossing arthouse film fare

"Le Rendez-vous" clearly is inspired by the films of the French New Wave. Shot primarily with a sometimes jittery handheld camera, the film provides an intimate portrait of a thirty-something murderess who is released from prison in the company of a prison guard so that she may visit her mother's gravesite. En route to the grave via train, a young hoodlum sits across from her and engages her in conversation. Why is he drawn to this older woman? Does he see in her a mother figure? Is there a future for this unusual couple? The first hour of this film is remarkably slow moving and will test the patience of most viewers. However, the director brings home the movie in fine fashion and leaves the viewer wanting to watch the film again to see if perhaps some subtleties were missed during that long first section. Unfortunately, this film is presented here in a fullscreen version; widescreen definitely would have been a better choice. Nonetheless, "Le Rendez-vous" est tres bien and I recommend it for fans of arthouse films. |
