U-Turn Sensibility
|
Recently, another film I watched with Gill and having a U in the title was "U-Man", a movie so warp factor six by its nutty plot line that I almost needed a good bottle of red wine to get me completely !*^!**!! to comment about it (or get over it) - as "U-Man's" out there lunacy reviewed sober, could be impossible to comprehend! (I've yet to comment on it!) This third movie of Gillian's "Do U Care?", however, I was expecting to be of similar mad fashion (and I suppose it is really, loony tune antics considering), but surprisingly after watching all this, I found it to be one very funny and clever satire, featuring some absolutely lunatic and hilarious visual gags, its almost a classic HK comedy (Eason should have got the Newcomer Gurning Award of 2002 for this....wait till you see all his expressive faces!), but also having a very clever and witty script. Aside to the humor, this film is also quite poignant with a soft core narrative about how a person can change their negative ways for the better (Eason's Raymond Mak type here), and consider other people more in life, than merely being slave to self centered ways and focusing only on No. 1! And even though this film is certainly scripted in an off the wall manner, it wins across with credit by these additional virtuous values. After introducing Eason's and Gillian's characters as children, where they show mutual affection for each other and having future ambitions to be successful in their work vocations: Eason claiming to want to grow up and become a fireman, the story then fast forwards to modern (2002) Hong Kong. Here, Eason is nothing at all the fireman he felt destined to be, but a boo hiss Raymond Mak type character, caring only for his own ambitions and very little for his fellow people. He is arrogant, uncouth, inconsiderate, (and very facially expressive) as he purposefully kicks a blind man's money collection tray everywhere, bumps and trips up a lady on her way to work, puts chewing gum over a babies face and generally annoys all his fellow workers at the invention concept business he works at, commenting about their bad breath, dress codes, whiffy arm pits and the like, all in his verbal bullying school boy way. And, also trying to obtain the best inventions his colleagues work on (like the executive elevator toilet!), and at business meetings claiming these inventions to be his own. Yes, the proverbial Mr B! Not a fireman, and not the sentimental little lad he was in his youth with Gillian. Eason's ambitious and aggressive nature, though, U turn dramatically when he gets involved in a car accident and damages his one hand through his car window screen. With a wired up hand to brace the damage, he then finds that whenever he comes into hand contact with various troubled people (which is nearly everyone he meets), he sensitively begins to empathize with them and their problems (as well as having an electric shock effect with each individual's negative electricity...and producing all of Eason's funny faces!). Eason's character by these mad wake up calls, eventually makes him learn more about other people's problems as he experiences them himself, and this begins to change his wayward attitudes. (This electric shock supernatural empathy is like a sort of indie version of a bump on the head!) Some of the visual aspects of these 'contacts' are hilarious, too! Gillian appears a bit later on in this, when she rescues Eason's character from the car accident, and you learn that she has entered the fire rescue service herself, reflecting her long past love for Eason, and of his own ambition to be the same. Gill is very sweet and warming in this film, and some of the scenes where she swims with Eason and tries to make him more jovial are lovely. Rain Li features also in this as a business associate and competitor to Eason, and with probably one of her most weird and oddball expressive characters she has done, by the looks of it - as she bobs her head around and waves her hands about in scary and lunatic ways (she reminded me of the strange mind melding character from an episode of the original 60s Star Trek series). But Rain's oddness I found to be quite endearing in a funny and unusual way. If you haven't tried this movie yet, and you feel in the mood for something a bit strange, but extremely funny - I can't see that this will disappoint you. Eason performs excellently as the eccentric and ambitiously overdriven lead here. Gillian, likewise, is one lovely gal to behold, and her verve in how she comes across here is fresh and virile. Cute as a button, too! Don't think run of the mill, tacky comedy here (or needing to get drunk after watching it!) - as what you get is a very good uplifting tonic and worth looking into. Just be careful, though, if you ever come across Eason and he shakes you by the hand and says: listen to the hand! Your secrets will be history! |

Haven't we seen this one before...a greedy person rediscover his good nature with a little help of supernatural intervention. Beside the funny Eason and cute yet inexperience Gillian, the movie has something else to offer. The plot might makes little sense but I really like the underlying message. A man rediscovering himself after years of material pursue, of course, with a help of a good woman. She is actually just a mirror of himself. Strong and faithful to her beliefs, she inspired him to recognize what's more important. Inspiration is what I find a movie ultimately valuable not just by it's pure entertainment value. In contrast, I prefer this movie over the so called hits like "Hero" and "Infernal Affairs." "If u care..." is a very rough and formula movie but it achieved the it's goal at the end...to inspire. What did you want to be when you were a kid? |

Nice Movie

A cute storyline, yet really unrealistic and even kind of boring... it's very ridiculous at times to the point where it's not funny. Eason delivers himself well as usual. He's just following a ridiculous scripts. This movie was funny at times, unfunny at most times. Watch this for great acting from Eason Chan, Rain Li, and Candy Lo. |
