Il Mare (HK Version)
|
For a romantic drama I would rate this movie a 3.5. Although the story and ending were predictable, the movie was well paced and enjoyable. Having to watch this movie with english subtitles, I have to admit that I was thoroughly disappointed. Often times the sentences were incomplete or cut-off and as a result made little or no sense, this problem was compounded further during important dialogue. Hence I would give this version of Il Mare a lowly score of 1 overall. Given that this is an official release from Edko Video, I have to say I'm doubly disappointed. I had similar problems with "My Sassy Girl (HK Release)" also from Edko. At least for that one I could understand the cantonese, but the english subtitles were attrociously inaccurate. Very disappointed - YesAsia should make the US edition of Il Mare available on their global site. |

Good movie
| Yup, I agree with the other reviewers. This is a good movie. I liked watching it. Though I felt there were some boring parts, it's still good. Very good story. Very original storyline. I saw this movie after watching lots of korean romatic movies. So, I feel that this is a kind of movie where someone should watch first before watching any other korean romatic movie. I think if I would had watched this movie before I seen any other korean romatic movies. I would have liked it even more than what I am thinking right now. Watch IL Mare if you haven't seen it. If you have seen it, then you already know it's good. |

A Romantic's Review
A Romantic's Review
| I read many reviews before finally venturing out and purchasing my own copy of Il Mare. I was not disappointed. After watching the film, I was left with a feeling of awe, but felt desolate at the same time. The story of two people, living in parallel universe, falling in love, and yet so perfectly crafted. I think the cinematography was amazing in that it illustrated how breathtaking Korea is and how the director was able to weave the story together so well that at times I completely forgot the characters were from different times. Being a romantic, I knew I was going to ball my eyes out. But my heart wretched when I knew the two people who had fallen in love that was so subtly expressed, were never going to be together. That was the most powerful moment of the movie. One could say at that moment, the audience would have an epiphany, which is why, despite being a hardcore romantic, I normally would have preferred a happy ending, I would take the tragic ending over the more conventional one any day for this movie. It was more moving, and creates an emotion that is indescribable. The movie is slow in movement but it works for this film, because it lazily drifts the audience along like the tides in the movie. I recommend this to anyone who believes that love speaks for itself. Watch it and believe it. |

Correction for a hk movie lover
|
To hk movie lover: No offense, but I disagree with you when you say God made it possible for the guy and girl to show up at the end of the movie. The guy basically gets the girl's warning letter and decides to meet her on the day she wrote the Christmas card? Remember? It's perfect timing for him and the girl. No God made them meet. He can only show up at the house at the end of the movie because he knows the date that is written on the Christmas card. So he decides to meet the girl on the day she wrote the Christmas card. You get it? See? There's no god involved. I already knew how he met her at the end of the movie before you wrote your review but thanks for your answer anyway. |

Further answer for Movielover80
| For why the Male actor cannot meet the girl is that he dead already after 1999, given all thing unchanged. To get a better understanding why the ending is that we can see that when the girl rushed to the mail box to sent out the last warning letter, she pray to god that letter can reach the hand of him. May be the god hearing and twisting the faith, the sense show the sky is in reverse motion..... time flow is being reverse...... and the whole future has been rewritten. Right restart at the point where the Male actor walk to house and the girl say "who are you?" |

Unique Korean's Somewhere in Time
|
Watched Somewhere in Time but did not watch Frequency, hence my review title. il Mare is my favorite Korean movie, but it is not the best. It's my fav b'cos it's unique, beautiful music, fantastic cinematography, and very good story. The mood is just perfect. The flow of the story is so lovely. Yes, I am in love..... I would have given it a 5 star if the movie stops at 1 hour 31 minutes and 44 seconds AND Lee Jung Jae wipe off his idiotic smiles for a minute. Maybe there is a director cut version that stops at the time indicated above? And why is it that Korean male leads tend to look like a twit when there is a female lead? I don't buy into the new age bs. The world can be divided into 2 types of people, those who prefer the movie's ending and those who did not. I actually likes and prefer the movie's ending (hint: Tim Robbin's quote in The Player) but the logical and intellectual part of me said it has to end earlier for it to be respected and considered as an excellent movie. |

cool
| If you are planning to watch or buy this movie, do not read this review. It was odd but i think from what i read, the guy was suppose to die. But korean film producers felt that it was way too sad for that to happen so they allowed him to live. The story kind of makes sense. Im thinking that the reason why he never met her at the beach when they made that date was because he was suppose to die. He was never suppose to have lived. That was the odd part. |

To reviewer SOS, thanks for your explanation!
| "Il Mare" is one of those movies we rarely ever see. It's a movie that has a certain rewatch value to it. After watching this movie say for 2 times or more, I couldn't understand the complexities of the "wrinkle in time" that Sung Hyun and Eun Joo were in. Especially regarding the things reviewer SOS had brought up. I'll probably watch this film again to interpret the film more accurately after reading SOS's review. There's one thing though, why does Sung Hyun say that if he doesn't meet Eun Joo after 2 years that they are meant to be? What's the meaning of that? Does Sung Hyun's "disappearing" at the beach have any parallels to Marty's brother and sister fading out of existence in his photo in "Back to the Future?" Perhaps reviewer SOS or some other person can post their review to answer my questions. Boy, this is one heck of a great interpretive film! Oh, and to those who think the ending is no good let me explain. The movie is a fantasy. It's about a romance between 2 people that can never happen in real life. The movie would be so terrible if it ended with the tragic ending. When Sung Hyun shows up at the Il Mare house at the end the movie has a great sense of closure. Kind of like an ultimate conclusion to end the movie. The idea is that Sung Hyun and Eun Joo not only live happily ever after and that the movie is going to end but that they're going to have a fresh new relationship all over again and it's obvious because the beginning of the film is the same as the end except everything in the past has been changed so that the ending is a slightly different beginning or ending if you will. This adds a very powerful magical touch in the movie that is rarely found in other films. And Sung Hyun telling Eun Joo if she wants to hear the "long and magical tale" at the end of the movie is a good way to close this film. She probably wouldn't have believed Sung Hyun was writing to her if he convinced her in the past. The ending shows the Il Mare house, Eun Joo, Sung Hyun, the mailbox, the dog and the fish and the Christmas card that Eun Joo is holding in both of her hands. The movie does a great job in showing all of these elements at the end in a harmonious manner. So there you go, the ending rules! If you're thinking of buying this movie, get the Overseas version. It has better English subtitles than the regular Korean version which is the one with the red cover with Jeon Ji Hyun on it. Unless you read Japanese or understand Korean get either the Japanese version or the Korean version. The Japanese version has better picture quality from what I know. The Korean one has a problem with one of the aspect ratios in the DVD. So it's best to buy the Japanese version or the Overseas version. Buy this movie right now and write your review! |
