No Regret (dir. Leesong Hee Il, 2006)
Beautiful, daring, and haunting, No Regret represents a breakthrough for both Korean queer cinema and independent filmmaking. Opening in only a handful of theaters, the gay-themed film not only garnered great reviews, it also managed to attract 40,000 moviegoers, setting a new box office record for an indie film. No Regret is the debut feature from Leesong Hee Il, Korea's first openly gay filmmaker. Leesong has long been a familiar name in the festival circuit, having directed the acclaimed short films "Sugar Hill", "Good Romance", and "La Traviata", which was a part of the omnibus Camellia Project - Three Queer Stories at Bogil Island. In No Regret, he continues to delicately explore universal themes of love and sexuality set against uncommon relationships.

No Regret presents complex, well-rounded characters that do not occupy convenient stereotypes. Lee Young Hoon, who starred in Leesong's "Good Romance", gives a stirring performance opposite Lee Han, who also appeared in last year's award-winning indie film Don't Look Back. The two young actors portray men of vastly different backgrounds, and the film subtly brings out issues of class structure and gay culture with both gravitas and good humor. The story is anything but predictable, capturing both the beauty and sorrow of love, heartache, and a life lived with No Regret.

Turning 18 years of age, Su Min (Lee Young Hoon) leaves his orphanage and moves to Seoul, working various jobs to save up money for university. After losing his job at the factory, Su Min ends up working as a male escort at a gay bar. Already close to hitting rock bottom, Su Min's life gets both more chaotic and more meaningful when Jae Min (Lee Han) walks into his life. Coming from a wealthy, conservative background, Jae Min keeps his sexual orientation hidden from his family. Although he is already engaged, Jae Min is willing to give up everything to be with Su Min, and the two fall into a passionate relationship. But when the realities of life catch up, love may not be enough.

The Railroad (dir. Park Heung Sik, 2007)
Two wounded souls. One destination. Park Heung Sik, director of The Twins and the critically acclaimed short film "A Day", presents his sophomore feature, The Railroad. During its screening at the 11th Pusan Film Festival, the film was well received by both critics and audiences. Starring Kim Kang Woo (Beast and the Beauty) and Son Tae Young (Sad Movie), The Railroad is a meticulously choreographed psychological drama about the lives of two unrelated people and the circumstances that ultimately bring them together.

Man Soo (Kim Kang Woo) is a train conductor. Everyday he performs the same old routines, and gradually his days begin to feel as uneventful and predictable as the ongoing rotation of the wheels on his train. One day, his train gets caught in a messy accident involving a passenger's suicide, and he is forced to take leave from work. He gets on the last train.

Hanna (Son Tae Young) is an attractive college instructor who is having an affair with a married professor. Her world is turned upside down when his wife confronts her. Abandoned and betrayed by her lover, Hanna is forced to face her own demons. She quits her job, and hops onto the last train. A train conductor and a college instructor seem to share nothing in common. But for Man Soo and Hanna, brought together by fate, finding solace in the companion of a stranger has never been better.

Boys of Tomorrow (dir. Noh Dong Seok, 2006)
Can a gun bring a better tomorrow?

Noh Dong Seok made his feature film debut in 2004 with My Generation, a striking coming-of-age drama that marked the up-and-coming director as a name to watch. Noh continues to explore the lives of Korea's lost generation in his follow-up Boys of Tomorrow, which premiered at the 2006 Pusan Film Festival. Straddling commercial and arthouse sensibilities, Boys of Tomorrow is a heady youth anthem that pendulums between moody musing and fast-paced action, telling a story that is both fatalistic and inspiring. Kim Byeong Seok from My Generation stars in the film, alongside Yu Ah In (Skeletons in the Closet) and Choi Jae Sung (Black Rain).

Close as brothers, Ki Su (Kim Byeong Seok) and Jong Dae (Yu Ah In) lead humdrum lives in the suburbs, dreaming of bigger and better days elsewhere. Ki Su works as a part-time driver to support his nephew Yo Han (Lee Dong Ho) and Jong Dae, whom he feels indebted to because of an accident years ago that left Jong Dae impotent. An aspiring musician, Ki Su bangs on his drums, dreaming of the day when he can leave his basement flat. Jong Dae, meanwhile, just wants a gun so he can become a true gangster. Their lives take an unexpected turn when Jong Dae's wish comes true.

시골 고아원에서 자랐지만 대학에 가겠다는 꿈을 갖고 서울생활을 시작한 수민(이영훈 분). 서울에서의 일상은 기대만큼 희망적이지는 않지만, 수민은 낮에는 공장에서 일하고 밤에는 대리운전을 하며 꿈을 이루기 위해 열심히 살아간다. 그러던 어느 날, 부잣집에서 부족함 없이 자랐지만 자신의 의지와 상관없는 삶에 지쳐있던 재민(이한 분)의 차를 운전하게 되면서 두 사람의 피할 수 없는 만남이 시작된다. 잠깐 동안이었지만 서로에게 깊은 인상을 품게 된 두 사람의 마음은 흔들린다.

너무나 다른 환경에서 살고 있는 재민과 수민은, 기업 부사장의 아들과 해고 노동자로 재회한다. 재민의 호의에도 불구하고 수민은 공장을 나와 여기저기 일자리를 찾아 헤매다가 한 선배의 소개로 전혀 상상하지 못했던 곳에 발을 딛게 된다. 그 곳은 바로 게이 호스트바. 내키진 않았지만 도망칠 곳이 없었던 그는 어쩔 수 없이 그 곳에서 일을 하게 되고 그의 일상은 완전히 달라진다. 한편, 집안에서 정해 준 약혼녀와 결혼을 앞두고 있지만 재민은 수민에 대한 자신의 감정을 외면할 수 없어서 호스트바로 그를 찾아간다. 행복한 결혼을 꿈꾸는 약혼녀에겐 미안하지만 그는 자신의 욕망을 버릴 수 없다. 결국 모든 것을 포기할 수 있을 만큼 수민에게 빠져든 재민, 거부하려 해봐도 자꾸만 재민에게로 다가가는 수민의 마음. 두 사람의 사랑은 점점 깊어져 간다.

서로의 마음을 확인한 두 남자의 만남이 잦아지던 어느 날, 재민에게 약혼녀가 있다는 사실을 수민이 알게 되면서 사랑은 위기를 맞는다. 재민은 현실과 사랑 사이에서 갈등하고, 이제 재민이 자신의 모든 것이 되어버린 수민은 절망에 빠진다. 그런 그들에게 닥친 또 하나의 예상치 못한 사건은 그들의 사랑을 더욱 알 수 없는 길로 몰아간다. 차가운 도시에서 시작된 이 뜨거운 사랑의 끝은 과연 어디일까?

지루하고 반복된 일상 속에서도 성실함을 잃지 않고 일하는 지하철 기관사 만수(김강우 분)에게는 얼마 전부터 자신의 열차를 기다렸다가 간식거리와 잡지를 건네는 한 여인이 있다. 가족도 동료도 인지할 수 없을 만큼 매번 바뀌는 열차운행시간을 어떻게 알고 매일같이 정확한 시간에 기다리는지 알 수 없지만, 그녀의 등장은 어느덧 만수의 일상에 활력이 된다. 하지만 그것도 잠시 예기치 못한 열차 투신 자살 사건으로 큰 충격과 혼란에 빠진 만수는 특별휴가를 받고 경의선 기차에 오른다.

같은 과 교수로 재직중인 대학선배와 위태로운 관계를 유지하고 있지만 흔들리지 않고 당당히 사랑하고 싶은 대학강사 한나(손태영 분). 남부럽지 않은 능력과 조건을 갖춘 엘리트지만 어쩐지 채워지지 않는 그녀의 공허한 마음은 갈피를 잡지 못한다. 생일을 맞아 그와 함께 떠나려던 여행은 뜻밖의 사건으로 조각나버리고, 지나치도록 냉담한 그의 행동은 한나를 더욱 비참하게 만든다. 애써 무시했던 상황과 마주하고 난 한나는 먹먹한 가슴으로 경의선 기차에 몸을 싣는다.

종대(유아인 분)를 지긋지긋한 현실에서 벗어날 수 있게 해주는 것은 총이다. 총은 그에게 유일한 꿈이다. 모형 총만 가득 가지고 있는 종대는 뒷골목을 배회하며 진짜 총을 구하려고 한다. 기수(김병석 분)는 잠자는 시간까지 줄이면서 대리운전을 한다. 힘들어도 레드 제플린의 존 보냄처럼 몰디브에서 드럼 치는 꿈을 꾼다. 몰디브에서 드럼만 칠 수 있다면, 아직 그의 청춘은 희망적이다.

오늘, 우리에게 꿈은 사치일까?
종대는 진짜 총을 구하기 위해 빌렸던 돈을 사기 당했다. 꿈이 이루어질 것이라는 그의 희망은 단숨에 사라져 버린 것이다. 기수에겐 짐이 하나 더 늘었다. 기수의 형이 조카를 말도 없이 떠맡기고 사라졌기 때문이다. 점점 희미해져 가는 그들의 청춘을 붙잡기 위해 종대는 안마시술소에 취직하고, 기수는 아르바이트에 더욱 매달린다.

과연, 우리가 꿈꾸던 내일은 올까?
