YesAsia Editorial Description

Bearing the same English title as the Frank Capra classic, It's A Wonderful Life is a hit Lunar New Year comedy with big Hong Kong names, pleasing romantic situations, and plenty of feel-good sentiments. Leslie Cheung heads a stellar cast as an outsider who visits the affluent Hong Kong family of pal Teresa Mo. What he finds is a group of troubled individuals facing romantic problems and inter-familial strife. Petrina Fung Bo Bo is having issues with husband Raymond Wong, so he engages in a Miss Doubtfire parody to get close to the kids. Meanwhile, brother Tony Leung Ka Fai is a stuttering comic book artist who falls for pretty schoolteacher Anita Yuen. Eldest sister Carol "Dodo" Cheng has her tough personality softened by wacky family friend Sean Lau Ching Wan, and the patriarch of the whole clan, Master Kwan Tak Hing of Wong Fei Hong fame, oversees the family with his powerful, commanding presence. With big stars and pleasing performances, It's A Wonderful Life typifies the feel-good family entertainment common during Hong Kong's Lunar New Year season, and was a major hit during its 1994 theatrical release.

Cavalcade of stars in holiday film Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
First things first -- this version of "It's A Wonderful Life" has nothing whatsoever to do with the Frank Capra classic of the same name, except that they both are set around the winter holidays. In this film, the controlling parents of three adult children have managed to mess up their children's lives through their heavy-handed parenting. The eldest daughter (Teresa Mo) fled to France simply to get away from her parents; she returns home for the holidays with a hippie-ish friend Ronaldo (Leslie Cheung) who crushes the hopes of her long-suffering suitor (Lau Ching Wan). The eldest son (Raymond Wong) is drowning his sorrows in drink after messing up his marriage to a lovely restaurant owner (Petrina Fung). The second son, a stuttering, hermit-like comic book artist (Tony Leung Ka Fai), finds difficulty overcoming his shyness to pursue the girl of his dreams (Anita Yuen).

Things take a turn for the wacky when Ronaldo starts dispensing off-beat advice to the various family members and their friends, advice which turns lives upside down when they put Ronaldo's ideas into action. It all adds up to a feel-good romantic comedy, with nice performances from Fung Bo Bo, Lau Ching Wan, and Leung Ka Fai. This "It's A Wonderful Life" won't make you forget the Frank Capra classic and its production values are straight out of the bargain basement, but it delivers a strong pro-family message and provides an amusing diversion. (Note: This DVD hasn't been remastered and its image quality is sub-par.)

It's A Wonderful Life Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This was actually the first movie dvd I owned which starred Leslie. Initially out of curiousity to see how Patrina Fung turns out now (I was a big fan of hers back in the 60s)and all credit due she has maintained herself very well. I wasn't a Leslie fan yet (had this dvd about 5 yrs ago) but the last 6 months changed all that.

This is indeed a good movie with good 'intentions' especially for chinese new year. All star cast of Lei Heong Kum (the mum), Carol Cheng, a then young Tony Leung Kar Wai, Anita and Kwan Tak Heng (aka the "original" Wong Fei Hong back in the 50s) and the father character (who played Wong Fei Hong's servant Ah Poon), Patrina Fung, Raymond Chow and Teresa Mo. There's good on-screen chemistry between Leslie and Teresa Mo. Leslie, Raymond and Teresa also starred in other chinese new year comedies together. Go get it!!
