YesAsia Editorial Description

From director Lo Chen comes It's All In The Family, an involving family drama starring Ivy Ling Po (from The Love Eterne, Lady General Hua Mu Lan, and The Three Smiles) and Danny Lee Sau Yin (star of John Woo's The Killer, Super Inframan, and The Untold Story)! Released in 1984, this bold dramatic film centers on the life of one Hsu Chih Yuan (Danny Lee), a brash young man who tries to free himself from the suffocating grip of his family obligations and somehow make his own way in life. However, Chih Yuan soon finds that the attainment of said desire is far more difficult than he could possibly have imagined. Unfortunately, old habits die hard, as the young man learns that honoring one's family isn't a duty that can be ignored quite so easily.

As the film progresses, a number of unexpected, terrible tragedies rain down upon his parents and siblings, much to Chih Yuan's dismay. While he isn't to blame for these unfortunate events, he can't help but feel disenchanted with his lot in life. With nowhere else to turn, Chih Yuan seizes upon the only available course of action left to him in order to live that serene, stress-free existence he's always dreamed of having. Featuring Ling Yun (from Haunted Tales, Flowers In The Rain, and Heroes Of The Underground), Ai Di (from Sex For Sale, The Crazy Bumpkins, and 36 Secrets Of Courtship), and Zhen Luo (from The Shepherd Girl, director Lo Chen's It's All In The Family is a gripping family drama not easily neglected!

Family Values Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I bought this initially because Ivy is in the movie. Now, I'm slightly disappointed that she does'n't have a major role. Despite that, the whole movie contains precious family virtues like kindness, understanding and unity. The script is well written and all actors portrayed their roles with love and empathy. The finale is sad, esp. the aged parents have to take over the care of Danny's new born baby.Perhaps it's the objective of the whole story: parental love is the greatest and they will always be there for their children through thick and thin.

A superior family drama Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is an ensemble film blessed with a good plot. The central character is well played by Danny Lee and he is ably supported by Ivy Ling Po who plays his caring sister-in-law, Ling Yun, who plays his brother and Ai Ti who plays his illfated lover. Of special mention is the presence of 40s & 50s EMI Pathe songbird Kong Chiu Hsia in her only Shaw role playing the caring mother to perfection. I spotted Malaysian songbird Sakura in a nightclub sequence belting in her distinctive husky tones. There is an interesting subplot involving Wong Yu and Yuen Man Tzu who plays the "baby" of the family. Although I would have loved to see my favourite Ivy Ling Po in more scenes, I must say that the few that she appeared in were very effective and she inhabits her role with her customary flair and brilliance. Not to be missed, this drama was underrated during its original release in 1974. Pick this DVD up and spend a rewarding 87 minutes with a family you will never forget.
