(3)Our Price: US$10.99Usually ships within 7 daysNovember 21, 2009 Top 'biao'What a stunning directorial debut for Yuen Biao. His artistic and technical expertise is definitely under estimated and he should have carried on with more projects from this because I'm sure he is up there with Sammo and Jackie.
We are rewarded with some beautiful Tibetan scenery and shots of the temple. Personally I feel that Biao is more or less being himself as his characteristics are (as we all know) patient, humble, friendly, loyal, kind, helpful, devoted, ...........Being an expert in his field of martial arts, all the fighting sequences with Yuen Wah equates explosive action time after time. This movie is no exception in that area. Good supporting roles from Michelle Reis and Nina Li who didn't do too badly in the action dept herself (check out her wicked and sexy body suit!). Old friend Wu Ma did a cameo as his lama sifu.
Not just another 'fight to retrieve priceless artifact' movie, this one is filled with tongue-in=-cheek comedy and flawless action sequences. Get it for your Biao's collection. I have.Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -
The Lucky Stars (DVD) (China Version)
November 4, 2009 Not that LuckyTotal false advertising and misleading fans to think that Gordon actually starred in this B-grade movie. For a 3-minute appearance, it's not counted. To rub salt into the wound, it's at the very end of the movie. Total waste of time. Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -

(3)Our Price: US$13.99Usually ships within 7 daysNovember 1, 2009 20 out of 10Truly one of the greatest martial arts movie ever crafted by his kungfu highness Sammo Hung. Yuen Biao, only in his second movie (his first was KnockAbout) and to be directed again by big brother Sammo. If you're a true martial arts fan you will not want to miss the powerful impact, fluid, flawless fighting sequences and delivery of the various wing chun movements. Injected with subtle comedy inbetween, you'll want to watch this movie at least once a month if you can.
Sammo delivered a true story of legendary Wing Chun master Leung Jan (Yuen Biao) and how he acquired that status. Lam Ching Ying also gave a performance of his lifetime as Leung Yee Tai. A rare moment when you get to see Lam Ching Ying in full operatic regalia playing a female lead in an operatic stageplay. Like his compatriots Sammo and Yuen Biao, his operatic background put him in good stead.
This digitally remastered copy (I didn't notice any difference) only had Sammo's interview and not that interesting. I'm glad I own the Collector's Edition where you have interviews with Yuen Biao, Frankie Chan, Sammo and Guy Lai. It's a pity Lam Ching Ying was not included. Get your hands on this one if you can.
A little trivial - Sammo reprise his role as Wong Wa Po (kungfu brother of Leung Yee Tai, aka sifu of Leung Jan) when Yuen Biao also reprise his role as Leung Jan in the TVB series Wing Chun (Nicholas Tse plays Leung Jan's son).Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -

(1)Our Price: US$6.49Usually ships within 7 daysOctober 14, 2009 Hop, hop, hooray! Not much of a fan of chinese hopping vampires, I'm so glad I took the risk and watched this movie. Of course, Lam Ching Ying had something to do with it. I was on a 'run' of sorts and been watching quite a number of his comedic movies lately and this tops it all.
All lead players have a genuine chemistry and I just can't get enough of all those canto jokes and insinuations. Bravo to the scriptwriter for such a neat package - believable storyline and not stray off. The unsung hero of course is Yuen Wah who's the main hopping vampire (Mr Yam's father). The action sequences and stuntwork were fantastic.
Now my only problem is buying the only available digitally remastered VCD cause they're not producing the DVD anymore. Better than nothing.

(2)Our Price: US$10.99Usually ships within 1 to 2 daysSeptember 21, 2009 Lyre music in "dts or dolby"I actually enjoyed this fantasy movie probably because I felt for Brigitte's character whereby her parents and only younger brother (Yuen Biao) were killed. But unknown to her she gets to reunite with him in the most unexpected circumstances.
Yuen Biao, still in his prime (I love his cheeky grin) did not disappoint in his usual flips, kicks and weaponry display. Carina Lau (who fell for him unexpectedly) was a surprise as I seldom see her in any wuxia movies managed to live up to her part and there's good chemistry between Biao and her in their few comical moments. I like Wu Ma, so unassuming but always play such brilliant supporting roles (playing Carina's father here) and he's also of the old school with martial arts skills. The fighting choreography was brilliant and of course since the ace weapon here is the lyre, it's not complete without the usual fire and explosive results when the music hits the air.
Our 'gender-bender' Brigitte Lin (whom directors like to cross-dress in mostly period pieces) threw in a fine performance as Biao's longlost sister hellbent on seeking revenge on the group that killed her parents.
One for Yuen Biao's fans and I'm glad it's in my collection.Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -

Snake & Crane Arts Of Shaolin (VCD) (Hong Kong Version) VCD
(1)Our Price: US$5.99Usually ships within 7 daysSeptember 21, 2009 Unexplored talents of JackieThe above vcd is in audio mandarin but I managed to watch one last week in audio cantonese. It is very obvious they were dubbed in canto (don't expect Jackie's voice) but then most martial arts movies from Shaw Bros and G/Harvest back in the 70s and 80s were in mandarin even though you can lip=read the actors speaking in canto.
I would presume that Lo Wei had probably decided to go with the flow of new trend of fighting choreography so that the fighting sequences wouldn't look too robotic. Just like the opening scene in 36th Chamber of Shaolin whereby a barechested, fit and gorgeous Gordon gave us a brilliant short display of movements, a young/handsome and extremely fit Jackie also gave us almost a good 5 minutes displaying his excellent form in the 'cheong' (tassled spear) and then a combo of knife against spears .
The plot had all the Shaolin Masters meeting once every 10 years to discuss and explore/exchange views on current artforms and perhaps devising a new top-knotch technique. They eventually did and called it "Snake & Crane". However, just after it was documented, all the masters were mysteriously killed, the book went missing and of course became earnestly sought after by everyone in the kungfu world. How did Jackie get involved? He came on from the beginning hinting and even 'showing off' the priceless book whenever he had a chance to 'cross hands' with crooks or whoever picks a fight with him. How did he come into possession of this book? He had a purpose and that's to track down a certain person with a birthmark on his left shoulder. Why? There's a twist to this story and I liked the fact that it wasn't revealed right at the start but midway so that the audience is drawn into the plot.
Nora Miao (an old favourite in most Bruce Lee's movies) is the only recognisable actress I know in this movie. She was one of those who was also after the book. A couple of other supporting actors (don't know their names) also gave a fair display. However, in all honesty, fighting choreography were so so and uncomparable to Sifu Director Lau Kar Leung's standard. And we all know by now that Jackie's talents were underestimated and unexplored by Lo Wei at this stage.
Overall, an enjoyable movie to see such a young and talented Jackie making his mark in the days to come.Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -

(1)Our Price: US$6.99Usually ships within 7 daysSeptember 1, 2009 Yuen Biao kick ass!!If this is Biao's debut movie, well, he'd certainly won hands down! I'm gob-smacked by his agility, talent and flexibility at that age. Of c ourse Sammo knew how to get the best out of him and I can't help but think of them (plus Jackie) performing their monkey kungfu in their youth. Their acts were so natural and fluid I'm sure they got a kick out of it too (one more time for old times' sake??) I love it.
Leung Kar Yan did fairly good as Biao's older brother and hats off to Lau Kar Wing (though his grey hair wig looked plastered) playing the villian and as in previous collaborations with Sammo, could do no wrong. All the fighting sequences were top notch. Just fantastic. Sammo showed his flexibility despite his size and I think the 'skipping rope' routine was a master's stroke. Training sequences are always excellent and awe inspiring to watch and Biao put in his share to equal Jackie's in Drunken Master 1. Yes, Biao (known for his flips and kicks) did perform almost 6 backward flips on top of a standard square table.
Go on people, this is a master's collection. Getting rarer by the minute!!!Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -

(1)Our Price: US$13.99Usually ships within 7 daysSeptember 1, 2009 When will he cometh again??What a gem of a movie. Yuen Biao stands on his own here in a fantastic collaboration with Yuen Wah (who's also from the same opera school). Biao plays a high-ranking imperial guard on a mission to recapture Yuen Wah (a fellow martial arts brother) who has gone on a raping and killing spree, the last involving one of the emperor's favourite concubine. To escape, Yuen Wah used the spinning Reincarnation Wheel but in their struggle, both fell over a cliff and frozen in time.
Fast forward 300yrs, and both men find themselves in Hong Kong. While Biao befriended Maggie Cheung by chance (clueless that she's a prostitute) and somehow became her house-servant in order to gain Hong Kong residency (she bullshit him), Wah continues his sinful ways. After a chance meeting, both men knew they had to put an end to this cat & mouse pursue. Will Biao succeed this time ??
Excellent fighting performance from both Biao (his kicks are legendary) and Yuen Wah who played his part to the tilt with his wicked laugh. I love his transformation and we even get a rare glimpse of his six-pack. Maggie was still new to the cinema world when this movie was made (probably around the time she appeared with Jackie in Police Story 1) but did an excellent job. She looked so radiant. I love it when movie greats agree to do interviews and reminise about the good old days. Yes, Yuen Biao is correct (Gordon Liu also said the same thing in his interview). It's harder to find true all-rounder action performers like him, Jackie, Sammo and a whole string of others from the same era because cgi will eventually overkill.
So, like me, I hope all you martial arts fans continue to buy these great movies because they're getting rare as hen's teeth.!!Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This)

August 15, 2009 One for the GirlsAlthough I've only just 'discovered' this movie, I just love it to bits. I enjoy the many cliche jokes without which the movie just wouldn't have survived.
Many familiar faces here with Sibelle appointed as the first training officer (very strict but fair) for a female commando/SAS team (of sorts). Kara Hui & Sandra Ng just 2 of the girls on her team. The 'Flying Tigers' squad (boy's team) is commanded by Stanley Fung.
Thoughout their training period, the girls learnt the hard way that only through mutual respect and support can they work as a team. On the other hand, the boys' team have their eyes full on the girls and trying to pair up as much as they can. It is an open-secret to the boys that their commanding officer Stanley (playing Mr Kan) has fallen in love with Sibelle but just can't get his nerves together to express his feelings. However, when both teams were required to go undercover to prevent a jewellery hiest by a group of terrorists, everyone put their skills together and the result was much better than expected (with a twist).
An oldie but a goodie. Dont forget to watch Part 2.Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -

Shaolin Temple
August 13, 2009 An old fave and still greatOne of the old fave. I believe the movie gave us all (fans of martial arts and the general public) a summarised idea of how shaolin martial arts really tops them all. The art is full of history. If the Abbott had not gone with the idea of accepting outsiders for students, then there would be no shaolin martial arts today.
It's also the only time that 'Ng Mui Si Fu' actually appeared in any shaolin movie and we realise how her fist techniques eventually came to be known as 'Wing Chun' . Another disciple, Mui Choi Fa (Fong Sai Yuk's mother) was also mentioned (see Disciples of 36th Chamber with Gordon Liu, Siao Hu, Lee Li Li)
It has long been rumoured that there was a turn=coat in the shaolin temple and it's true the temple was destroyed by fire during the Ching period. As with 36th Chamber, the training techniques saves the day and the fighting choreography was great (Sifu Liu Chia Liang's trademark) . With 3 top stars like Ti Lung, David Chiang and Alexander Fu Sheng heading the list, no one actually outdone the other as the emphasis was on loyalty, friendship, sacrifice, truth and compassion besides the art and its learning process. The supportive cast were also great . As a fan of martial arts and shaolin temple history, I encourage those with the same interests to give this movie a go.
Only disappointment is they did not interview Ti Lung and David Chiang for a bit of walk down memory lane.Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -

August 12, 2009 Eavesdropping by another nameWhat started out as a simple 'bug, listen & get the crooks' surveillance eventuate in dire consequences for 3 good pals running the main operation. I like the opening sequence as it really puts me into suspense mode and have that 'what's going to happen next' feeling. And I was definitely not disappointed.
Sean Lau portrayed a well-liked team leader (complications with his lovelife) in his surveillance team comprising of 'old hand' & buddy Louis Khoo (married with children, stretched finances because of medical bills) and rookie Daniel Wu (engaged to be married to a wealthy girl, his future father-in-law thinks he should quit the force and work for him instead for better prestige and money). All 3 friends have their personal problems to sort out. However, during this high tech operation what they 'overheard' would change their lives in a short space of 3 weeks. Their integrity, honesty, loyalty, friendship & love were questioned and the end result was a huge price to pay.
Definitely a fresh look at bugging operations and makes you wonder........ what else can they do out there?? Who's watching and who's listening?
Overall, a suspenseful cop thriller and the flow of the plot was good.Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -
Traces of A Dragon: Jackie Chan & His Lost Family (Japan Version)
Traces of A Dragon: Jackie Chan & His Lost Family (Japan Version) DVD Region 2
(1)Our Price: US$44.99July 20, 2009 Dragon secretsIn this personal documentary, Jackie let us into his family 'secret' which he himself only found out not too long ago. Jackie's father decided to reveal all as he thought "I could drop dead tomorrow and Jackie will never know".
We knew him as Chan Kong Sun (literally translated from cantonese meaning 'Chan, "born in HKG"). A wonderful story=telling by his father about his youth, what he did for a living and how he met the love of his life (Jackie's mom) . We also found out that his father is actually not what you think and Jackie's mom, with all the traits of a loving & doting mother, loved to gamble in her younger days. Later we discover that this is his parents' second marriage, both had siblings before but 'left' them behind in China to escape to Hong Kong due to dangerous circumstances.
Jackie also show the old American Embassy on the Peak and the living quarters where he lived with his parents (now a 'monument'), how his parents scrimped & save to send him to opera school, some interviews with old friends & neighbours who knew Jackie since birth and the exceptional old clobber (still in the same spot all these years) who used to mend Jackie's sneakers!! and their home in Australia. So sentimental.
You also get to see rare photos of a young Jackie & wife together with a toddler Jaycee. And to round off , melancholy moments of Jackie with his mom before she died. I was tearful by then.
I like this doco for it's honest contents and Jackie do deserves the success he's enjoying cause he worked hard for it and took chances when they presented themselves. Still, he never forget his humble beginnings!! Good on you Jackie!!Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -
Martial Arts Of Shaolin
July 20, 2009 Another one of Jet's bestCertainly another one of Jet's best. Here he portrayed a young north -Shaolin monk, harbouring thoughts of seeking revenge for his parents who were killed by the Governor. Unbeknown to him, there's also a girl having the same plans cause her father was also killed by the governor. However, she's from the south Shaolin temple. The twist in the plot was that they were betrothed from birth. In the midst of an eventual assassination attempt, both met up and became friends. Much to the initial horror of his masters (thou shall not kill), they eventually came to see Jet's cause.....
Fighting choreography by legendary director/sifu Lau Kar Leung brought forth a fantastic display of many Shaolin techniques (a couple of them by real sifus) in the fight sequences, Jet's power, flexibility and magic in his skills (real stuff with no camera tricks) were amazing.
Put this in your collection to follow Jet's rise in his career.Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -

Bill Tung, still his friend and second-in-command, assigned him to the Mainland (just across the border) to go undercover (as a poor country boy living in Northern Territories) to befriend a drug boss (played by Yuen Wah). Yuen was tipped to escape and return to HKG. A couple of good stunt choreography with Jackie & Yuen making their escape, hiking the railwail uphill and then taking an unbelievable super glide downhill ala-circus-style.
His relationship with Maggie Cheung on stable ground, Jackie accepted the job but not revealing to her the dangerous nature of the assignment. He told a porky that he's been selected to go on special training for a couple of weeks. Actually he was sent to meet with Michelle Yeoh (with the Chinese Army) for a quick brief of undercover identity before being packed off as Yuen's contact for the jailbreak.
Watch out for the scene when Bill Tung disguised as the mother and Michelle pretending to be Jackie's sister. Both ended up on Yuen's payroll and next destination ....Kuala Lumpur.(to rescue the big boss's wife enroute to appear in court) . Meanwhile, Maggie worked as outbound tourist guide and things took a turn when Jackie accidentally bumped into her at the hotel swimming pool. All hell break loose when Jackie's & Michelle's identities were exposed. What followed were the fantastic rooftop chase with Jackie dangling from the helicopter as it makes it's escape and hovers above a running train and Michelle almost steal the scene with her bike stunt on the train.
Simply another fantastic collaboration between Stanley Tong and Jackie (the first being Rumble in the Bronx). Stanley loves location shooting and the 3rd will be The Myth.
If you love PS1 & PS2, you simply must have this. Remember, no stunts repeated!Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -

(1)Our Price: US$13.99Usually ships within 1 to 2 daysJuly 19, 2009 I'm luckyI must have viewed this movie about 30x and just discovered I haven't given it a review. So, here goes.
Seems to be a follow-up winning formula for Sammo Hung after Winners & Sinners. It's a simple plot punctuated in=between with non-sensical ideas & goofy gimmicks that makes this movie a winner for me.
Jackie & Yuen Biao (both cameo) play interpol undercover agents hot on the trail of ex-crooked cop who had fled to Japan to join forces with their Japanese associates in illegal money laundering through gambling dens, etc . After YB was kidnapped, Jackie reported to undercover-agents coordinator police chief, Walter Cho, for reinforcement. The idea is to have new faces that the ex-cop can't recognise and so infiltrate their hideout. Result : Jackie's old buddies from the orphanage... ...Sammo, Stanley Fung, Richard Ng, Charlie Chin & Eric Tsang.
So enter Plan A . Sammo & gang havent been in any female company for a while and drools at the idea of having Sibelle for a whole week at the safe house during their briefing. Their hairbrain schemes brought some side-splitting gags. Plan B, assist Jackie and infiltrate the gambling den in Japan by pretending to be robbers (just after their last heist) on the run from the HKG police. With Jackie working on the side, they succeeded in rescuing Yuen Biao as well as caught the crooked cop.
Watch out when Sammo KO Nishiwaki Michiko, and Jackie had a run-in with Dicky Wei in the finale. The opening stunt had Jackie climbing & leaping from the ferris wheel and then performing a flying-over a container truck driving only a little car (with Yuen Biao as passenger). This particular scene has been featured in many of Jackie's special interviews.

Police Story (VCD) (Digitally Remastered) (Hong Kong Version) VCD
(1)Our Price: US$6.99Usually ships within 7 daysJuly 17, 2009 Jackie on Fire!I've got this dvd years ago and wondered why I never put in a review, silly me.
It's a brainstorm idea from Jackie (at his prime) to make an unforgettable movie. Unforgettable it is with never repeated eye-popping stunts. Playing Chan Kar Kui, an honest, hardworking-never-say-die, eager- to- please cop supported by his second-in-command superior and friend, Bill Tung. Mars plays his buddy cop-friend.
Basically movie started off with police crackdown on a drug dealing in a shanty town gone wrong through an unintentional cockup. This shanty town was actually built as a set to accomodate the wicked car chase and Jackie actually ran down that almost 45degree slope in his pursuit of the crooks followed by that umbrella and bus stunt! Because of the screwup and partly because Chu (the drug lord) tried to bribe Jackie, they made frontpage news. To boost the police image, Jackie was made pin-up boy and model police officer. The drug lord was kept in remand awaiting conviction for drug dealing & bribery while Bill & company try to convince Selina (drug lord's secretary) to turn witness for the prosecution. Bill & Jackie hatched an idea to get Mars to 'kill off' Selina so she would think it's the drug boss trying to silence her. Scared, she agreed but the plan backfired with hilarious result on court day. Maggie Cheung plays Jackie's girlfriend who finds herself playing second fiddle to his assignments. Second screwup and Jackie got transferred to a village outpost in Northern Territories.
Selina (played by Brigitte Lin) was eventually kidnapped as bait and Jackie framed for killing a crooked cop while rescuing her. Jackie turned into Dirty Harry to clear his name and Selina turned witness for the prosecution by gathering evidence for Jackie. The finale came into fore with plenty of dangerous stunts in the shopping centre where candy glass fixtures were shattered, chaps got thrown off escalators and who can forget Jackie's one-off death defying jump from the railings onto the spiraling light display spanning 4-level high to end up hitting a glass fixture on the ground floor??? He was actually injured in this stunt. Everyone was happy, crooks were caught, Jackie cleared his name and ..........until PS2.
You gotta have this to keep up the trilogy. One of Jackie's best!!Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -

(3)Our Price: US$13.99Usually ships within 1 to 2 daysJuly 15, 2009 Feast for the eyes - Part 2I have to correct some points here regarding the 'cliche' characters of junior Wong Fei Hong for my earlier review. I was over enthusiastic. Jimmy Wang Yu (original one-armed swordsman) actually had a cameo as WFH's father but there was no junior Fong Sai Yuk. Instead it was actually veteran Shek Kin (playing himself as Sifu Shek) and his son, aptly named Kin. Watch the little encounter between these 4 characters in the train when it went through the tunnels. Also worth mentioning when Richard Ng declared himself an undercover agent ( secret Agent #2) for the government , then suddenly 13 more turned up.....
Sammo really have almost 'who's who' in this movie including Dicky Wei (good punch up with Yuen Biao), Kurata encountered Richard Norton (with his famous line "painful??"), Sammo himself with Cynthia Rothrock, Yuen Wah, Eric Tsang, Paul Chong, Walter Cho, Sifu Lau Kar Wing (as well as Yuen Biao & Hsiao Hu performed some amazing flips and jumps from the roof) and ........ find out for yourself.Did you find this review helpful? Firstly playing a simple tractor repairman/farmer and then becoming an accidental Yakuza enforcer. But this enforcer (still a little naive) will later learn that in a world of underbelly connections, money & power will lure even the most hardworking, honest & ordinary people into its ugly business of drugs, illegal dealings, corruptions & run-ins with the law.
A special mention to Daniel Wu who did a fantastic job as the poor, timid illegal immigrant always at the wrong place, at the wrong time. His turn-around makeup (absolutely like second skin) was really amazing!
Hats off to the director who maintained the 4 different languages in the dialogue (Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese & Hokkien) without which the script would not have gone very far. Don't worry, the English subtitles are great. A note of caution to a couple of torture scenes, upsetting but still essential. Well done!Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -
Merry Christmas (VCD) (China Version)
July 14, 2009 A Real Merry ChristmasAnother Karl Mak number and what do you expect? More of his trademark humour. I watched it because of Leslie Cheung and of course it's a 10-star performance from him. However, the other supportive cast carried well with the plot, which basically has all plans backfiring!!
Basically, 2 teenagers (Danny Chan & sis) encourage their father (Karl Mak) to show more interest in their neighbour (nightclub singer) as they thought she's a good candidate to be step-mum (she babysits the toddler for them and is actually attracted to Karl) . Karl was in denial until the neighbour announced she's relocating to America as her cousin wanted to marry her. All plans to the fore but Karl still couldn't say "I love you". After she left on christmas eve, he realised how much he actually love her and regreted his macho behaviour. But all's well that ends well, he had the best christmas gift !!Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This)
