Korea's celebrated rock band Jaurim returns with its latest album.
Two years have passed since Jaurim's fifth album All You Need Is Love and now it's time for their follow-up release. The 4-member band, which first debuted in 1997 with the album Purple Heart, welcomes listeners to a sound garden of progressive psychedelic beats. The principal track You and Me was penned and composed by the band's female vocalist Kim Yu Na and describes the relationship between lovers. Other highlights on Ashes to Ashes include the emotional number Seoul Blues as well as "Shining" (Track 15), which shows off the instrumental skills of Jaurim's various band members.

국내 최고의 록밴드 자우림이 2년만에 6집앨범 “ ashes to ashes ”
2006년 10월20일 록밴드 자우림은 정규 6집 앨범인 “ ashes to ashes ”를 발표한다. 1997년 데뷔하여 가장 영향력 있는 한국의 록밴드로 자리매김 하고 있는 자우림의 이번 앨범은 자우림이 그간 발표했던 앨범들과 사운드적이 차별성을 가지고 있으면서도 그들이 가지고 있었던 음악적인 궤적을 일치시키고 있는 것을 그 특징으로 하고 있다. 자우림 스스로 " 짝수 앨범은 무겁고 우울하다"라고 애기하고 있는 것 처럼 6집은 앨범 타이틀인 “ ashes to ahes ”가 의미하는 바와 같이 전체적으로 무거운 잿빛의 곡들을 수록하고 있다. 더욱이 CD의 매체성이 불확실 해졌음에도 불구하고 앨범전체의 동일한 정서적 컨셉을 유지시키고 7분여에 다라는 곡을 포함한 15곡의 긴호흡을 잡아내는 성숙한 뮤지션의 모습을 보여주고 있다.
김윤아의 작사작곡의 "You and Me"는 연인관계에 대한 이야기를 김윤아가 자신의 저술과 음악을 통하여 항상 제기를 해왔던 『사람 사이의 소통의 문제』를 주제로 한 이번 앨범의 대표곡이자 타이틀곡이다. 셰계 최고의 사이키델릭 사운드를 선보였다는 평가를 받는 '비틀즈'의 sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band 에서 빅히트를 기록한 넘버는 무엇인가? 팝송 꽤나 안다는 사람이라도 빌보드 차트에서 Top10를 기록한 곡이 있었나? 아무리 기억을 더듬어도 떠오르지 않을 것이다. 그럼에도 '비틀즈' 최고의 걸작으로 뽑히고 있는 이유는 개별 곡의 대중성 보다는 팀워크와 일관된 콘셉트라고 할수 있지 않을까. '자우림'의 6집 앨범을 대하고 sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band를 떠올렸다고, '과장도 유분수' 라며 손가락질 하지마라. 나쁘게 표현하면 마땅한 타이틀곡이 없어서 생각난 애기일수도 있으니까. '자우림' 맴버들은 앨범을 녹음하면서 자기들끼리만 똘똘 뭉치고, 주위 어느 누구의 말도 듣지 않았음이 분명하다. 그것이 자우림의 스타일이다. '자우림' 6집은 5집의 복고적 로큰롤에 프로그레시브 옷을 입혔다. 드들도 일종의 내적 근대화를 이룬셈이다. 6집은 함께 들을 앨범이 아니다. 혼자서 들어라. 그러면 내안에서 정화작용이 일어날 것이다.

Having just finished listening to Jaurim's latest work, I thought I would provide a few of my inital impressions: As with each of their previous albums, Jaurim ventures into new territory with Ashes to Ashes in order to evoke a particular mood. The first adjective that comes to mind is "melancholic." You and Me, the most promoted track on the album, offers a taste of this and can be found on the band's website. As much a departure from the pop-rock stylings of their 5th album as that album was from the blues- and hard rock of their previous work, Ashes to Ashes contains echoes of each of these, but feels more experimental, in particular with regard to style, vocals, and instrumentation. "Over and Over Again I Think of You," for example, is a wonderful piece that speaks to irresistible, consuming thoughts. It begins with a brooding quality, adding sonic layers throughout repetition of the motif until it builds into full-blown obsession. Those expecting a offering similar to the band's previous efforts may be in for a surprise or even disappointment; although a few tracks like "Oh, Mama!" are signature Jaurim rock, most of the tracks lack the hooks and accessibility of their last several albums. Jaurim is an amazing band and Yuna Kim's voice haunts my dreams. If you're new to them, however, perhaps a better place to begin would be Vols. 3, 4, or 5. Happy listening! |
