本世紀中葉江南一個農村，染坊老板楊金山為了傳宗接代，續弦娶了年輕姑娘菊豆為妻，楊金山上了年紀又身患暗疾，沒有生育能力，日子一長，菊豆偷偷與他的養子楊天青產生了愛情並生下一子天白。四歲時，天白無意將癱了下肢的楊金山撞入染池淹死。
由於吃人的禮教，菊豆與楊天青依然過著表面嬸侄關係的生活。漸已成人的天白怒殺與母“通姦”的生父楊天青。菊豆萬念俱灰，縱火燒掉楊家世代相傳的祖業“楊家染坊”。
